What you do is get the patient to sit up and relax, and you actually just massage that shoulder, until the muscles relax, and the arm should pop right back into the socket, and if you keep them distracted and relaxed, it makes it easier. It is called the Cunningham technique. Its worth looking up, though you only should do it if you somehow can't get to a hospital (like if you're stranded on an island) ---- The old method of pulling it down and putting it back into place does work, but it's very painful and risky. ------- At the time when this episode came out, the massage technique wasn't being taught to first responders, and since a spinal surgeon wouldn't have to know advanced wilderness first aid, he probably would only know the old way
