[Early Access] Vikings - 5x9 A Simple Story - Group Reaction
Added 2018-05-09 00:39:42 +0000 UTCWe are at the penultimate episode of Vikings Season 5! We are all so excited to catch up with this show when it comes back in a few months!
So much to talk about in this episode. Let's start with the big one, Aethulwulf's untimely bee sting. I mean what!!!!!! How did you react to that scene? And afterwards Alfred takes the crown! I was confused as to why Aethelred would turn down the crown but in editing I noticed as Aethulwulf was dying he told his sons that Judith was wiser than both of them and that they should listen to her. Being that Aethelred was much closer to his father, his decision makes sense after he gave it some thought probably.
Is Rollo serious about this team up? I mean I know Hvitserk and Ivar are his family too but I imagine his bonds are much stronger with Bjorn and Lagertha. I can only hope this is a double cross and that Rollo will come to the aid of Kattegat in the end. However, in the past when we have expected Rollo to do the right thing, it hasn't ever gone that way.
Poor Floki is on the struggle bus to get this settlement established. It seems most of the people are on board but Eyvind and his family are just not having it. And of course the inevitable conflict leads to the surprising death of Bul. Is this going to send Eyvind on the war path? I really think that conflict is not avoidable here. They don't want to participate but they don't want to lead either. They have to go and I hope Floki and his settlement can find a way to achieve it.

2018-05-09 12:40:20 +0000 UTCI have to admit that I really like how they "killed off" Aethelwulf. He was such a savagely good warrior, I've had mad respect for him ever since "Kill the Queen". And then he dies from an allergic reaction. Just shows that no matter how big, brutal, skilled, good or clever you are, you just can't fight medical or health related issues. Reminds me of the movie "Lawless", where Tom Hardy plays Forrest Bondurant, f*cking relentless dude who survived so much shit, like getting shot, throat cut open and then later in his life, he falls in a frozen lake, and dies from pneumonia.. I just really like that they didn't make Aethelwulf die in battle, it would have been such a cliché, in my opinion. At the same time I totally get why people were frustrated with the characters death, I do. I just thought it was a very creative approach.

2018-05-09 10:38:03 +0000 UTCNow that you're getting closer to the end I guess I can discuss some gripes I have with the season. My main issue is Hirst's unwillingness to let go of Lagertha. I love her character but her existence is detracting from the story lines of Ragnar's sons. I was truly hoping that Hirst would double down on Ivar and Bjorn's story lines this season and have them go on their own journeys. I understand Lagertha is tied to Ivar and Harald but I think Hirst should have let her go early in the season and transfer the story's focus unto Bjorn, Ivar and maybe Ubbe. I don't know if they couldn't because of budgeting reasons but hopefully 5b won't spend so much time in Kattegat and we can return to what the sons should be doing. Also, when I saw Aethelwulf's death I was shocked and absolutely livid. If you needed him dead, why not let him die like a warrior in one of Ivar's attacks. And then maybe thrust Alfred to power by making Aethelred feel unsure or unready to lead. The entire sequence of thrusting Alfred to power is ridiculously rushed and its gonna create unnecessary, boring drama between Aethelred and Alfred next season.

Hope that helps. And I really hate Magrethe. I hope she dies before the end of the season.
