Origin of the Ceramic Desert/Crater Wastes

The crater wastes/ceramic desert are the barren, irradiated eastern region of The Shell. This area, once a dense knot of factories and industrial infrastructure, was the site of the first management engine tests.
It was a disaster (in the most tropey and predictable way possible), and the first generation management engines rebelled. The progenitor fungus, knowing the risk of an angry management engine in control of manufacturing infrastructure, opted to utterly destroy the region from orbit. This was before the Shell was entirely "roofed over."
The weapons they used caused a bigass explosion, yes, but they would also EMP and force override the ceramic, disabling its ability to hold itself together.
Buildigns not intitally destroyed would look fine... Until they start crumbling to the touch, like a sandcastle on a hot summer day. The powdered bones of these buildings became the Ceramic desert.
