I know what you mean for sure, but I do still see some older parts of remote Japan in fairly bad shape. Mostly due to neglect than mis-treatment, however. -E

In Japan even when it's broken roads, buildings and etc... it feels like a "atmosphere of old" and not like a "devastation and poverty". Maybe because they try to keep it clean and take care of what they have, even if it's already old. I don't know. But it's a big emotional contrast in comparison with my own country.
