Is it Finally Time to Change Hybrid Mana? | #708

From the format’s inception, color identity has been a core part of Commander, creating deck diversity by forcing players to work within restrictions. But should those limits be loosened for hybrid mana? In most formats, hybrid mana makes cards more versatile, but in Commander it actually holds them back. Lately, the Commander Format Panel has floated changing how hybrid mana works with color identity. Would this help the game, or hurt it? Don’t miss our in-depth breakdown.

I think it’s a great idea to add hybrid I’m a new player just starting in February but have found a love for the game! But not playing some of the simple hybrid mana cards because of color combo gets frustrating I love the idea of making hybrid a choice of which color I want the card to be!

Travis Miller

Either way is going to have some confusion, but I think changing it would be more confusing than the edge cases we currently have with extort and firebending. Hybrid mana costs can be PAID with either color, but the card itself is still multicolored in all respects. Yes, you can play them in mono-colored decks in other formats, but those formats don't have the color identity rule. The line has to be somewhere, and it's perfect where it is. If designers want a tool to allow hybrid mana to function as "either/or" in commander, then that tool should be a scalpel rather than a chainsaw. Design a mechanic that allows it, like on Fallaji Wayfarer, rather than changing a format-defining rule.
