[SILVER] Legend of the Galactic Heroes (S1E8) "The Castrop Rebellion"

So this is the first massive change from the first adaptation, but also the novels. In the OVA Castrop has a blatantly Roman aesthetic, with everyone wearing togas. In DNT they feel more in line with the standard Imperial culture. I understand the change and agree with not going full Roman, but I feel like the idea that different planets in a galaxy-wide Empire would have different cultures fits well. The MUCH bigger change here is how the battle is carried out. In the OVA Maximilian bought a series of defensive satellites from Fezzan to protect the planet, the Artemis Necklace. This is not in the novels or DNT, but serves to introduce the viewer to Fezzan's willingness to play both sides of the conflict and to inform the viewer that the Alliance capital also has one such defensive array. Which is a fact we won't know for far longer in the DNT adaptation. Kircheis in the OVA uses Seffle particles to burn away the satellites, once again reinforcing their usage as a potent weapon and revealing that the Empire also has that technology. It's a short fight, but reveals a few interesting bits of lore for the future. What's interesting is that DNT is different, but is also not faithful to the novels. I had to pull out my copy and struggle forever to find the rebellion until I finally noticed that it was so unimportant in the grand scheme of things that it gets a mere 5 pages, with the entire rebellion resolved in 3 short paragraphs. Allow me to share the 2 paragraphs most relevant to this, the actual direct battle between Kircheis and Maximilian: "Maximilian, frantic over the threat to his main stronghold, was negligent in protecting his rear. Kircheis, having hidden his fleet in a treacherous region of an asteroid belt, let them go past, then launched a sudden assault on their undefended backside, delivering a devastating blow. Maximilian withdrew from the field of battle, only to be murdered at the hands of subordinates hoping to lighten their own punishments. His remaining forces then surrendered." (LOGH: Dawn pg. 169) That is the entire fight from which they had to make this episode. I think everyone can forgive both DNT and the OVA for making significant changes here. The Castrop rebellion is quite literally a footnote in the history of this universe, an event that perhaps foreshadows flaws in the Empire or gave Reinhard a bit more influence, but was otherwise completely irrelevant to any of the future events. It's one of the many thousands of conflicts humanity breezes past in our rush to the more "important" parts of history. The fact that LoGH contains events like this makes the world feel so much more realistic to me. There are going to be events that set up massive conflicts, but there are also going to be events that get no more than a few short paragraphs in the history books.
