NEW VIDEO: Can YOU Fix Climate Change?

Never before in human history have we been richer, more advanced or powerful. And yet we feel overwhelmed in the face of rapid climate change. It seems simple on the surface. Greenhouse gases trap energy from the Sun and transfer it to our atmosphere. This leads to warmer winters, harsher summers. Dry places become drier and wet places wetter. Countless ecosystems will die while the rising oceans swallow coasts and the cities we build on them.

So why don’t we just like… prevent all of that? Well, it’s complicated.

NEW VIDEO: Can YOU Fix Climate Change?

And don’t even get me started with nuclear!

Erika Marks

Also, you are saying that pulling a whopping 29% of our emissions won’t only SLOW our descent? And how are you saying that even with solar panels reliably set in SPACE to beam down electricity CONSTANTLY and manufaturing being COMPLETELY climate safe producing electric cars that have effective net totals of ZERO total emissions won’t solve the problem better then not moving at all? Even if that only will save 29% of the total and will have that erased with a whopping ZERO environmental consequences that is STILL not good enough for you SOMEHOW? Is this now CONCRETE, with an even lower total CO2 emission present and a much larger role?

Erika Marks

please respond with any feedback you wish!

Erika Marks

I agree, MOST people won’t agree to that, even though if given the opportunity I might go for it. Regardless, restricting the argument to mobility does not discuss the true scale, and even with your argument of the child labor, that would be absolved if we were to get the minerals from space. Up there, we will not only be not damaging the environment, but we will not need to use any CO2 on it if we are committed not to after the first liftoff and push as we can get it all from a solar array in orbit and use the medals from the existing minors on the asteroid. If you are wondering if there is actually enough metal in the asteroids to support us, you can go look up the material composition of them. The craft could be assembled by machines that are built using the iron from the asteroid and powered using the solar panels; an idea especially lucrative using a moon base, something we CAN reasonably accomplish in 10 years. Finally, I would like to make an example out of two countries Kursgeasget has used in past videos, France and Sweden. They are living proof these concepts can work to some degree and just need to be proven.

Erika Marks

Hey Erika Marks, thanks for your insights. Two points from me here. 1) the main issue with mobility is not with either gas or electricity. No, it is the elephant in the room. Our increase demands of moving around is killing the climate, whether by gasoline car, electric car, or by bio fueled plane. We should just stop doing that or restrict it to the absolute minimum. Second, and this is clear from the first, no one, not even you, will elect, voluntarily vote for a party or government implementing such a radical policy. No, sorry it won't happen. People will have to suffocate and even than, suffocate without oxygen masks to step out of their cars and the live they're used to live before they will come to their senses. Proof me otherwise in 20 years time. I buy you a beer.

johannes

I would like to infer that you are saying that is is fully the fault of the people; this sentiment implies the video is saying that everyone should opt out of a car when the reality is that the video has said that electric cars exist and that companies should be made to advance them. The people will suffocate because cars can and will break and that when they do they will have no other choice but electric. Communism will work, but how many people will want that and will that create another separate problem? Your child labor point is erased when you realize that you only need enough to make machines to do it for you and that asteroid mining, if we were to peruse it in the interest of CLIMATE CHANGE, we would not need to spend any effort or increase our operations’ carbon footprint; it would be self-sufficient. This video does not ask everyone to transition away from carbon individually; it asks corporations to make products to trend away from it. Not that they need to bike or be more efficient; but that the entire society does in the products produced. To address the final point, and one that should make this argument impossible in all its forms, if we were to have communism or fashisim, who is to say that the dictator(s) would not revolt against this climate friendly ideology in the pursuit of money and a large enough military to keep their country captive permanently? This would be a problem much larger, much more immediate and much more unsolvable then climate change and is a future we cannot allow. With all that said, it makes me wonder if you stuck around to the end of the video… please send your feedback below.

Erika Marks

Hey!! Will you have merch for this 2022? I would love to buy some pretty stuff to gift. :D

I have received an email regarding this update but gmail could not verify it came from Patreon (thus marking it as spam). Can someone verify it is safe and not someone impersonating the update?

Tomasz Kozlowski

Highlights (unfortunately) that there is no way on God's green earth we will come close to the climate goals of 2030.

Craig Tilley

I'm not allowed to vote in Switzerland, the country that boasts to be the most democratic country in the world (liers)

johannes

No, you can't. To answer the vids click bait question. Democracy will not change a global problem. Democracy was not made to do that. I'm afraid we need Communism or a short period of (eco-) fascism to do that. Let me give you an example. Given the alternative of public transportation into a city how many still insist on driving themselves despite the obvious nuisance of jams, waiting and finding a parking spot. My conclusion: People need to suffocate before they leave their car behind. Do you owe a car and not suffering a mobility challenge? you are guilty. E-mobility only exubarates the problem as child labour to produce the rare metals for batteries and cars are sofar away nobody cares. Producing the power is moved out of your immediate view but still is needed. Because we invented and embraced democracy and at the same time discovered the advantage of fossil fuel use we are simply doomed.

johannes

It's a great way to explain a lot of things in a small amount of time. No wonder it's you're longest video by far.

Adele

Voting is the very least we should collectively do to combat climate change. There are other things that are potentially more effective... but someone like Bill Gates doesn't want us to think about those things. ;)

Aaron J. Shay

I LOVE THIS VIDEO

The title card is brilliant. I think it's meant to be unappealing to turn heads and gain attention. This is probably the most serious content Kurzgesagt has posted.

Tom Farrow

I do find the title card a little… unappealing?

Erika Marks

I have been waiting ages for a video that does that!

Erika Marks

Finally somebody points out the actual awnser

Erika Marks

That was a beautiful video. Really love you all.

ghostman

It’s so depressing that if I basically stopped doing anything for the rest of my life I’d save 1 second of global energy emissions.

Rich

Really enjoyed the full analysis on this video. Especially the feedback on the the personal responsibility narrative. Amazing work folks! Keep it up!

Rick

My problem with systemic change as described is it seems so very slow. But I guess if the alternative is to make no, or backwards, progress, slow is better? That just seems very unsatisfying to me.

LonMcGregor

Awesome video :D

Beanslinger2

"If you're able to watch this video, this includes you"... People tend to forget

Thorben Menne

Exited to watch

Finlay Parker

Amazing video guys. Keep up the good work!

Supolt

Yes! Systemic change! I love this. I really hope this goes viral.
