2021-02-21 23:23:45 +0000 UTCWhen I was a kid my dad explained to me that Mr von Trapp was in the navy. I was confused because Austria doesn't border the sea. But he was in the Austro-Hungarian Navy which did have access to the sea. They fought in WW1 alongside the Germans. The Austro-Hungarian Empire makes up many modern countries and was very diverse ethnically. After they were defeated the empire was broken up and Austria has no navy. Its interesting since Mr. Von Trapp very much seems like a product of the old empire before the horrors of WW2. He represents a good Austria.

I don't think you were supposed to like the Baroness, that was the point lol but I get what you're saying. this was one of my favorite movies growing up, we would watch it over and over and sing along to it. even watching it today, it still makes me tear up.
