BL Chapter 5, Page 19...

...Made it!  Whew, what a week and a half.  Thanks for your patience everyone!  Sorry this page is a bit of a retread of a previous page.  Trust me, it's leading to something.

Gonna start right now on the next page, but I'm not sure when it will go up.  Definitely next week.  Hopefully Wednesday.  Things are definitely getting busy over here.  Only 19 days till the big move!

Next page transitions back to Meg and Ellie's game.  Gonna be lots of fun!  Chat soon!  Goodnight!

I know the pain of a 10 con rogue, feels like every fight my rogue either gets beaten to a pulp or she manages to avoid danger altogether lol. It's slightly rare for her to take a moderate amount of damage. It's kind of fun though playing a glass cannon that has a few reaction based tools to survive. Absorb elements (arcane trickster), uncanny dodge, a fun homebrew magic item with a risk/reward factor to using it, in a way it's more fun than just having a high HP pool to soak raw damage.

LOL. Could just be written that way to not be too confusing to non D&D players in the comic, or maybe she just didn't update her stats from when her character was going to be a cleric, I could see that given she's new to the game too.

Florena Emberlin

I swear, it should be considered a right of passage. I’ve heard some great stories. :)

Stereoscope Comics

Reminds me of one time I was playing a monk early on. Got a crit, got excited. Rolled my dice. Only 1s on the damage dice. The dice can be cruel sometimes.

Florena Emberlin

Bingo! :)

Shrub Jump

"We didn't even scratch them!" Ah you must be playing World of Tanks.

DuskStealth

You can get a boost in D&D too. It's just not built in as a mechanic and depends on your GM. I once killed a goblin rider and its mount in one attack because of a series of successful rolls involving swinging through a moving train, grabbing a random battle axe, jumping through a stain glass picture of jesus (for some reason), and throwing the axe into the mount that was trying to catch up to our escort target while tossing a grappling hook behind me so that I didn't get trampled. Because the mount died, he just said that the rider got trampled to death as a consequence.

I agree, if the description itself is a game mechanic in your system then you need to describe how your system wants you to.

Johannes Bretscher

Lol, this happens in my group's games all the time to the point where we have more fun coming up with silly descriptions of misses and low damage hits.

Michael

Lol

Rick

Meg seems to have my curse with dice. In a campaign a played a while back, every single level up, I rolled the minimum I possibly could on the dice. And with a Con modifier of 0, my Rogue had an extra serving of glass canon! That being said, good luck on the move! Moving from the southwest corner of the country to the northeast corner is one hell of an adventure! Are you shipping your stuff by train or truck? Either way I'm guessing it'll take a few days to get there and you'll be living in a kinda sorta empty house for a few days...

PulpFiction

Apparently Str is either 10 or 11 :P

PulpFiction

What is meg's stats?

Rick

This gets complicated in games like Exalted, where the description literally gives you a boost lol. What I generally do there is describe the way the character attacks, without describing the actual hit.

horngeek

Wanted to embarrass Val, Meg? Two can play this game. Btw. it would be funny if Meg rolled 6 and 9. 69 kinda fits in context of the comic.

Fenix

A hard learned lesson. Took me a while to figure that out but boy it saved me a lot of frustration. 👍 Another helpful tip; roll your attack and damage at the same time. A real timesaver.

Stereoscope Comics

I see what you mean. The last panel on the last page and the first panel on this page are meant to fit together but yeah, there’s too much of a contrast. I think I can fix that by making a slight adjustment to the first panel of page 19 and redoing the last panel of page 18. Meg should be holding the die, getting ready to make her roll. That’s a pretty simple fix and I think I know just how it needs to look. Good catch. Thanks!

Stereoscope Comics

Pretty much. :)

[Somewhat unrelated D&D stuff] A nice technique to avoid disappointing results of flashy action: Roll first, describe later. Describe what happened how you did hit or miss. On the other hand, that can slow down a game when the descriptions get longer than "anticipation descriptions". So, maybe try it and if you don't like it leave it.

Johannes Bretscher

Hey, just my 2 cents. I feel like a transitional panel is kinda needed here if you ever get the time. Since there is a huge jump cut between this page and the last. It goes from them freaking out about the hug to Meg just rolling (and as was established it's Megs first time playing). I'd love to see a page where Meg fumbles around a bit. Or maybe a them getting into an encounter. Other then that, love the comic so far.

ICanHasDD Ben

I'll have to think of this D&D game in terms I understand: (I get the enemy tank in my sights, and it's in range--a perfect shot! ) Me: "Fire!" (Boom!) Radio announcer: "We didn't even scratch them!"

Shrub Jump

Ahahahahaha... The dice can be vicious.

Fritz Sands

1!! XD ☝ A badass looking page, and looking forward to seeing how this turns out. I hope the move goes well for you.

kou32

Poor Meg XD, she'll get her revenge in time though.

Henri Black

Val: "I swear I'm not doing this to you on purpose."
