Patreon Q&A - October 2023

It's the first of the month, and the Patreon Q&A is back! Not gonna lie, it's a little bit awkward timing. The regular season is coming to an end today, and the playoff picture if mostly set, aside from the proper seeding.

A super topical question about the playoffs might be obsolete by the time I answer it a ~week from now. But I'll let you all use your discretion. Drop your one (1) question for this month's Q&A down below! Could be about baseball, Youtube, or life.

Hey Bailey can you please rank every player in MLB history with the first name Nolan? Thanks.

Nolan McDermott

If you were the Giants, who would you pick for your next manager?

Stephen

Would love to get your thoughts on the 'leaked' interview questionnaire from the Yankees baseball operations position. Did anything stick out to you as unusual or revealing about how front offices think? Seems like an interesting way to screen out bad/antiquated thinking from their applicant pool. https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/16w6hy6/i_applied_for_a_baseball_operations_job_with_the/ Thanks for all the great content!

Why did the giants struggle so much during the end of the season? Comparing september Giants to july is insane.

slinkyenjoyer1002

What postseason loss that your favorite team suffered was most devastating to you personally. As a Phillies fan, mine is losing the NLDS to the Cardinals in 2011. Has to be a loss you remember watching.

If you were managing a team and you could take one player from each decade to fill out your squad who would you take, to put you in the best chance of winning a World Series? So you could have a starting pitcher from the 60’s, catcher from the 70’s, shortstop from the 2000’s etc but when you take a player from whatever decade you can’t use another player from that decade. Also the decade you take the player from is the skillset they have from that decade (so if you took 90’s Barry Bonds it would be his power/speed/defense skillset as opposed to 2000’s Bonds with his plate discipline and slugging.

What's your favorite baseball book that you've read this year?

ajnrules

*Rodney Dangerfield voice* That Nico Hoerner, I swear he don't get no respect. 4th in fWAR among 2nd basemen over the past two seasons, I tell ya

Will

If a player pitched all 1400+ innings of their team's season next year, how low would their ERA+ have to be before you’d no longer automatically give them the Cy Young?

Leo Thomas

does the damian lillard trade make the bucks the favorites in your eyes next year

Tristan Wille

Hey Foolish! Maybe too intensive of a question, but if you have to create a pitcher with a five pitch arsenal consisting of your favorite of each pitch (i.e. Nolan Ryan’s fastball, Pedro’s change, Wake’s knuckleball etc) which and whose would you pick?

Gaermph

Do you think that the Pirates should keep the Jack Suwinski experiment going next season?

Boongash

One of the best defensive players, Ha-Seong Kim, (also one of the best looking guys in the league) broke out offensively this year, although he did slow down at the very end. With his peripherals, was this just a fluke or another step forward? Also, who do you think the best defensive player is in the league regardless of position?

Francis Alipranti

What's the worst World Series MVP snub that isn't Livan Hernandez over Moises Alou in '97?

Ryan McGovern

Here's an evergreen question since the timing is weird: Do you go to many games in person? If so, what do you look for in a "good" ballpark experience and what's your favorite?

MZ

As a Twins fan, I’ve spent a decent amount of Kenta Maeda pitching this season. His delivery starts with one foot stepping back onto the rubber and then he pauses in that position for a second before going into his windup. This doesn’t seem to be a hesitation pitch thing to mess with the batter’s timing but rather a consistent part of his delivery. The interesting thing about this is that the pitch clock stops when he takes that step back. Maeda is old enough that he developed that move before having to deal with the clock, but do you think we’ll see more pitchers in the future adding features like that to their deliveries to maximize their rest between pitches? How else might clock pressure throughout the development pipeline impact pitchers’ mechanics?

Paul

How valuable would a hypothetical player that can foul off a ton of pitches in all their plate appearances be if they aren’t a very good hitter? In other words, could a player that slashes like .200/.300/.250, but is able to work 10-15 pitch at bats consistently by just sticking their bat out, keep a Major League job simply for his usefulness in driving up pitch counts? Let’s say he’s a utility man with average defense at two or three positions.

Loved the Satchel Paige video. What do you think of MLB's decision to retroactively include the Negro Leagues and their statistics as part of MLB? Seemed like a misguided attempt to paper over the truth of racist segregation in favor of ahistorical feelgoodery to me.

Brady

How do the Braves trick so many players into signing long term extensions for salaries far below their actual value? Is hypnosis involved? Or should the MLB be concerned that Atlanta-based organized crime syndicates are holding these players’ family members hostage?

Jason Timmerman

If YouTube hadn't worked out, what do you think you'd be doing for a job?

Dan Russell

Kebryan Hayes foolish 50? Cheap starters pirates *should* sign?

alursai

Kind of a 2 part question, but where do you see Ohtani realistically signing, and where would you want him to sign if it was your choice?

Noah Dorroh

What’s the move for Seattle this offseason? ~just~ fell short this season, and will remain in a tight division for the foreseeable future. Figuring Houston and Texas stay as talented or acquire more talent, how aggressive do the Mariners need to be in this offseason, and in which areas do they need the most improvement?

Jason Coppe

Favorite Mario Superstar baseball character?

Kyle Wilde

Sorry it's so long holy eff

One of my favorite pitching seasons ever is Clayton Kershaw's 2016. He had a 1.69 ERA, a 1.80 FIP, 172 Ks to 11 walks for a 15.64 K/BB ratio, with a WHIP of 0.725. That 15.64 K/BB is the best ratio of all time over Phil Hughes in 2014, with that weird 11.63 K/BB season. The 0.725 WHIP is also the best of all time, over Pedro Martinez himself in 2000. The reason nobody considers Kershaw's 2016 this among the best pitched seasons? He only threw 149 innings. What do you think about qualification requirements in a modern baseball setting? Do you think it's bad for the sport that only a handful of players are considered "qualified" year to year? Should the requirements be changed, and should those changes be retroactively applied to past seasons?

Borb

During your creative process, have you ever had an idea for Baseball Bits that you’ve wanted to do, but didn’t because someone else already got there first? As an example, Dave Stieb and his repeated failure at getting a no hitter before finally getting one seems like a very Foolish Baseball-y topic, but Jon Bois/Dorktown did a whole series on him. Adam Dunn’s entire career was basically made for Foolish Baseball before Foolish Baseball, but that has also been covered by various baseball YouTubers. Is this something you consider or am I just making it up in my head?

Evan A

What are you most looking forward to about this upcoming offseason?

Sean McGee

There was a piece in the Athletic about the problems between Preller and...everyone, especially Bob Melvin. Seems the Padres have core problems leading to their repeated disappointing seasons. What will it take to fix their problems? And will they for 2024?

Keegan Tatum

Hi Bailey, Are there any lessons to be learned from the 2023 Padres season or is it really just a repeat of the 2020 Mets? Thanks

nick podd

I noticed this as well, and I have a follow-up/related question: if AI generated images were used in the video, why was that done, especially given the myriad of complaints both against the technology (such as the massive usage of energy to run these AI programs) and about the ethics and effects of AI image generation, primarily from from artists who see this as threatening their work and livelihoods? It feels like it runs counter to many of the comments made about unionization, fair pay, etc. throughout much of your work.

bwakaflocka

What's a popular, well-liked video game that you either disliked or just weren't that into

Heinous

Who was the most impressive player in the regular season for you? And who was the mist disappointing?

Onni Peltola

Who would you include in a ceremonial, "impact on the game" wing of the HoF? I'm thinking guys like Tommy John, Mario Mendoza. Dudes who don't have HoF statistics but impacted how the game was played/the vernacular of the game.

Thomas Gentry

What is your perfect baseball playoff home viewing day, from the number of games, food, to the company you keep (if any), and everything in between.

Paul Bauer

Is there a version of barrel% that includes foul balls? I feel like foul ball luck has got to be a factor.

Henson Burk-Fawcett

How much baseball do you actually watch regularly? Do you watch all Braves games? All highlights? Highlights from other games to know what's going on?

Leo Barlach

Should the Cubs fire David Ross or stick with him?

Joshua Watkin

A friend of mine noticed that in the Satchel Paige video it looks like you used some sort of AI up-scaling or generation with some questionable results, particularly around hands and faces. What was the reasoning for doing this, what was the process you used, and are you planning on doing it more in the future?

genderdruid

Is playing a "specific brand of baseball" still possible in the world of Sabermetrics?

Robert Matheson

What’s your go to method of relaxation? Personally I love a nice stroll around the neighborhood with the AirPods in.

Alex Schofield

Hello Bailey, hope you're well. Playoffs are literally a day or 2 away, but I'm curious who your 'they shouldn't be here' and 'they should DEFINITELY be here' picks are, if you have any.

Andrew Pippin

Let's assume that MLB does decide to expand again in the near future and add two more teams. Who wins a World Series first: one of the two expansion teams, or the Seattle Mariners?

Carl Mizell

Hey Bailey, happy playoff season! Any particular pre conceived notion about a player, team, style of play, etc. that you've had changed through your research for baseball bits?

Maxwell Skipworth

Dogs or cats ?

Ralph Davis

Why do you think the BBWAA has failed to honor Jim Creighton and Lip Pike, the first true stars of the game?
