2nd Chance Countdown: Fan Favorites - Episode 16

Well...this was a fun experiment! I really enjoyed these eight songs, all of which were originally submitted for a Fan Favorites episode but didn't get enough votes for the video the first time around. I've gone through all of the past Patreon Fan Favorites polls and selected songs that I was particularly interested in hearing.

So, I hope you enjoy this potpourri of a countdown!

Diamonds and Rust - Joan Baez
Easter - Marillion
River Down Below - Riverside
All Along the Watchtower - Bear McCreary
The Flood - Leprous
Emerald - Thin Lizzy
Bless the Beasts and the Children - The Carpenters
Jurassic Shift - Ozric Tentacles

2nd Chance Countdown: Fan Favorites - Episode 16

Another great FF! Doug, check out "Holloway Girl", on the same album as "Easter", for another Marillion song inspired by The Troubles. It concerns Judith Ward, a woman unjustly imprisoned for IRA bombing attacks that took place in 1974. She had falsely claimed responsibility for them as a result of her mental health issues. People were campaigning for her release at the time the song was written. It would be another 3 years before she was finally released. When you've done that, go back to their debut album and have a listen to "Forgotten Sons" for an entirely different perspective on The Troubles.

I saw Riverside on that tour, after the unexpected and sudden death of Piotr. That was probably the most emotional gig I ever saw. You could feel the pain of the guys and how dedicated they were to pay homage to their friend who passed away. I suggest their latest album ID.Entity, which is much more optimistic, while also being very critical about our world. I'm also a big fan of Ozric Tentacles and Jurassic Shift has always been on of my favorite song and album. Saw them live in 2008 and that was one of the most psychedelic concert I ever witnessed. Herbal assistance was welcomed for this one :) Ed Wynne is one heck of a guitarist.

Easter is easily one of my all time favorite songs. The 5/4 ending just can't last long enough for me. So beautiful

Fan Favorites - Episode 16 The B-Sides... Listening to that Ozric's track, you need some early Hawkwind in your life.

Bear McCreary recently joked wondering how anyone actually decided to risk hiring his young self for Battlestar Galactica. That job changed his life. I vividly recall this particular episode and how integral of a part the music played for the duration of the entire episode, slowly building up. It's an incredible rendition and remains one of my absolute favorite episodes of TV ever. He deserves all the success he has had since then. The Cylons are a race of robots, the antagonist of the humans in the show.

Doug. if you're interested in Irish rock bands who use traditional Irish tunes in their songs, you should listen to Horslips. They were a 70s band, and their album 'The Book of Invasions' is a modern interpretation of the myths and legends of the successive waves of immigrants who came to Ireland.

What a fun, eclectic group of songs! I wasn't familiar with most of them so it was especially enjoyable for me. Thank you Doug... and John for the photobombs... lol

Please consider to do the whole Brave album by Marillion. Thank you for the vídeo.

Carlos Regidor Iglesias

His voice color is reminiscent of Mikael’s to me. And, the chord voicing and progressions have some similarities.

Highly recommend watching Doug's You Tube videos on Riverside and Leprous. Some of my absolute favorite Daily Doug videos. Leprous - Nighttime Disguise -Episode 360 Riverside - Escalator Shrine - Episode 238 Riverside - Second Life Syndrome - Episode 320

The Riverside song as Doug states is about the band moving on with out their good friend and lead guitarist. The guest guitarist in this song was asked to officially join the band and they released a new album with him earlier this year. Great album. About the song itself. This song is about the man talking to the spirit at his grave site. The spirit begs the man to stay and rest while he tells his story so his memory lives on. There are two times a person dies. Once when they are no longer physically present and the 2nd when a person is no longer remembered. I always took the river being a memory as ever flowing. If my story flows on, Pitor (guitarist) will always be remembered. I also find it fascinating that Riverside reminds Doug of Opeth. These two would never be confused on the prog scene, but they are two of my top 5 favorite bands. Doug, is it the chord progressions or the atmosphere that remind you of Opeth?

Ozric's.. I remember working at a liquor store as a kid in 1999-2000 and attached to the handles of Yukon Jack (oh gawd) was a promo cd sampler of random bands. I grabbed one of the CD's to check out all the bands and the song by the worst named bands Ozric Tentacles had a song "Coily" that completely caught my attention. Still a fan of the song and the band so I guess that marketing ploy worked...

I'd never heard them before. Impressive! I'm going to have to look into them. So thanks!

My full dedication to Karen Carpenter and to Heather is preserved on the Discord, in audio essay form, in the thread "Celebrating Women's History Month", in the #club-events forum.

Marillion Easter - a song so inextricably tied to an incredibly personal experience that it brings me indescribable bliss. Marillion is special well beyond that and I'm pleased they've have captured your heart.

Thank you for your reaction to my Leprous pick! Loved your thoughtful analysis as well. Hard to choose one by them but I went with the "less is more" pick like you mentioned. I saw them a few years ago live and they are truly an experience. Einar is truly gifted - check out his new solo album! Thanks again for including them in your fan favorite second chance picks! Rock on Doug! 🤘
