There's some consistent techniques used in this song that provide its flair and sound...and many, many modulations! I hope you enjoy!

For sure...the first one is abrupt and unexpected...and the rest of the modulations continue the trend, so we're not as surprised by them.

To my ear, the modulation that stands out the most is the very first one, where the vocal first enters. Given that, as you say, this is a very academic piece of music, I would offer that the "uncomfortable" nature of that first one is how the composer "primes" us for all the key signature mayhem that is to come. Because after that first key change, the rest of it - no matter how outlandish it may be - feels almost natural.
