Songs from the Master List Vol. III - Fan Favorites Ep. 18

I'm proud to present the third installment in our 'Songs from the Master List' Fan Favorites episode. All of these songs are wonderful, and this ended up being quite a romp for an hour and a half.

Thanks, as always, for your participation! I hope you enjoy.

I saw Renaisssance back in the summer of 1978 in Philadelphia. They did Ashes are Burning as their closing encore (as you thought). The airy quality to Annie's vocals at the end were achieved by her standing about 10 feet away from the microphone allowing her to kind of belt for the high notes while keeping that light sound. It was incredible!

or even more obviously...as in dot-com...the internet, and its endless array of information-monitoring software...

Jeff Norman

"Panopticom" -- the name seems to be a wordplay on "Panopticon", and "com" as abbreviation of "communication", reference to the ever-watching communication satellites flying overhead.

Tim van der Leeuw

Thanks, Doug, for exhausting yourself on our behalf! The effect on the drum solo in Nothing At All is a "flange." Back in 1970, just about the only way to accomplish that was to take two identical recordings of something and slowly move them in and out of sync with each other, making sure that they never got so far apart that they would sound like a "slap back" reverb. It was so great to hear Ace of Wands again (it's been a long time since I listened to that album), especially with your delighted reaction to it. And this is probably just me, but even if Chris Squire, or Tony Levin, or even Jaco Pastorius is playing it, a five-minute bass solo is just a bit overindulgent. Well, maybe not if it was Jaco...

Thanks for doing Ace of Wands Doug! Thanks to all who voted for it! Voyage would indeed be a great EPL!

Pam Norris

Overnite Session deserves an EPL! Amazing album.

Jean-Michel LaFontaine

Thanks for including a Zappa song, although I think there are still a couple of other Zappa things I recommended which have been on the master list for a long time. Hopefully you will get to those also before too long.

BRIAN MILLER

YAY!!! Voyage of the Acolyte is one of my favorite prog rock albums EVER. Listen to the rest of it!! It's so varied & beautiful. And that was my first time hearing Panopticom & it was fantastic! Love Peter Gabriel. He is so expressive & thoughtful. Thanks!!

Ford H. Cotton III

"Voyage Of The Acolyte" would indeed make a good EPL, you'll hear where "Ace Of Wands" leads!

Bill Coonley

Thank you for doing both mixes of “Panopticom.” As I said in my suggestion to do this on the Discord suggestion thread, I could not pick out differences between them; they were too subtle for me. But once you pointed out the differences you heard I was like, “Ohhh…” So again, thank you.

Illume Eltanin

Doug, I was at one of the Carnegie Hall concerts, and Ashes are Burning was, in fact, their encore.

Dave Cohen

Interesting transition from Zappa to Renaissance

Dave Cohen

Nice collection of tracks. Very pleased that JLP reached you. His albums are all such a great listen... just whisks you away.
