Extended Play Lounge - Episode 16 - Poll
Added 2022-03-06 02:01:17 +0000 UTCNo...this is not the Episode 15 video. I'm sorry...I'm behind a bit. I'm recording Episode 15 (The Human Equation) tomorrow. But, I need to get caught up on the EPL episodes, so here's the poll for episode 16. The last time we did a 'standard operating procedure' poll was for Episode 13. In that poll, Led Zeppelin won, and we listened to Houses of the Holy. For Episode 14, I did one of my 'Doug's Choice' episodes, choosing Supertramp's Crime of the Century from our Discord Recommendations channel. For Episode 15, I elevated Ayreon past the first round of polling, as I had just scored an interview with Arjen, and Ayreon came in second in the previous poll.
So, now, we're including Frank Zappa as he was the third place finisher in the last poll. I'm adding The Grand Wazoo to the Zappa selection, as it is newly on our active recommendation list. And, the other four selections also include albums. So, you're choosing for the artist AND album this time. It's one round only! I'm curious to see which selection wins!
Voting is active through next Thursday, March 10.

I think it's great that we get a mix of albums in these extended sessions. Most would agree that the seventies was a sweet spot for prog and classic rock, but there are really good albums from this century that deserve a listen. I'm sure Doug has probably has enough material for several years yet. Maybe alternating the recognised [note the correct spelling please!] classics with newer material would please most, and allow many of us to discover new bands. As a perspective -PAAE was the first album I ever bought in the early seventies.

2022-03-19 17:31:28 +0000 UTCNight at the Opera is my favourite Queen album, Clockwork Angels is very interesting, and I'd love to hear Doug's thoughts and Pictures is an intriguing classical / Prog crossover that Doug might love / hate... I want ALL of them!!! :-D

2022-03-13 22:31:53 +0000 UTCELP, Frank Zappa, Queen and Rush on the same list - hard choice. People shouldn’t be allowed to change their votes though, as it allows people to upvote something that generally not many others want.

2022-03-11 16:14:05 +0000 UTCPictures at an Exhibition is far from ELPs best work.

2022-03-11 13:48:40 +0000 UTC@Terry Price, rather than "liking the artist and wanting to give them a chance" I'd say it's more related to knowing what to expect and what to look for, to get to that "anticipation and release" that can be so pleasant in music. Btw, I was just re-watching "Crime" and noticed that about half way through the video Doug comments himself "It's going to take me a couple of listens to get my hands around it"

2022-03-10 22:56:13 +0000 UTCI have a feeling that Doug may have a hard time notating the section of Keith's solo when he is jabbing knives in the Hammond!

2022-03-10 17:33:55 +0000 UTCAgh! Too many that I want to hear Doug's views on... please make sure that all of these that don't make the vote this time have another slot next time! :-)

2022-03-10 16:54:19 +0000 UTCThere are a couple of portions on ELP's Pictures where video would help explain what Keith was doing onstage (the Moog ribbon solo, the L100 organ wrangling toward the end.) But there doesn't seem to be video of the Newcastle performance as featured on the album. There is a 1970 London concert on video that helps put those sections in context, but some of the audio & added visual effects are... not always very good.

2022-03-10 16:00:00 +0000 UTCNot convinced the list is a mix between very popular and virtually obscure, if the list reflected albums of equal popularity then I would get it. Quality is best judged on first impression, if it grows then that’s generally because you like the artist and want to give them a chance. The obsession with minor artists in a list like this always amazes me. Pictures is a brilliant album especially considering it’s live, no dodgy tracks on Crime of the Century.

2022-03-10 08:51:59 +0000 UTCPictures at an Exhibition is a brilliant album although EL&P did a very personal interpretation that, for someone who loves the original music it may be an excessive departure at some points. Doug, we're not playing pranks on you with our selections, first listens can be tricky, there are great albums that may need listening to them more than once to properly appreciate (e.g., Crime of the Century) and there are great albums where a song or two are "less satisfactory" but are still worth a good listen because of the other songs (e.g., it happened in Houses of the Holy, and I think it may happen again in Pictures at an Exhibition)

2022-03-10 07:48:00 +0000 UTC@Adam Borowa - the more typical process is to send recommendations through the Discord Server (see your "My membership" section here on Patreon for instructions on how to join) using the channel #recommend-submit. After submitting, it gets upvoted by other members in the community, and that helps Doug better estimate the level of interest.

2022-03-10 07:18:02 +0000 UTCDuke would be great. Their last real prog album in my opinion. Phil's lyrics from the heart and easily relatable to the average listener.

2022-03-07 19:12:08 +0000 UTCYep, Six Wives would be awesome, the performances he did in 2012 of this album were outstanding

2022-03-07 15:25:55 +0000 UTCCouldn't agree more! I've been waiting for a solo Wakeman reaction since first discovering the channel. Any of the 1970s A&M releases would be great, but I'd vote for Criminal Record.

2022-03-06 19:25:20 +0000 UTCI hate to be a stick in the mud, but I think it's way past time for Mr. Richard Wakeman to be elevated beyond his sideman work (awesome as it may be). When you think about the nascent period of prog and the embracing of the concept album, it's been too long - all hail the caped wonder!
