I think the performance of "Playing in the Band" from this same movie soundtrack is an interesting example of the suppleness and subtlety of their rhythmic approach. The song's built on a 10-beat pattern...but it's subdivided in several different ways. And, in the middle section, it sounds to me as if they're retaining the *feel* of the rolling rhythm they're working in...but not the time signature, and in fact I think the idea is, for a few minutes, everyone's in their own little time cell...but still listening to and working together. Worth checking out.

I would have to think hard about a particular performance, but I think Estimated Prophet is very representative of the Dead and would fit neatly in The Doug's wheelhouse. Another notable possibility would be Eyes of the World featuring Branford Marsalis (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEE_R4VIkR4). Caution Don't Stop On The Tracks (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tek7AI7EcTI) might work for a wacky tobacky Wednesday. But I have to say that when I think Dead, I think Ripples, Jack Straw or China Cat Sunflower->I Know You Rider, with a side order of Black-Throated Wind (these were always my favorites to play back in the day...)

I so enjoyed this piece of music. I know all the prog rock songs that Doug covers but this was a personal favorite as a Deadhead. We all imbibed and took that journey together. I guess it doesn't matter anyway.

May I suggest Truckin’ from Europe 72’ for your next Grateful Dead song.

Ricky

I can hear it, so need to start at the beginning. Is that a Motif? I've had Kurzweils mostly, but some Roland, Yamaha, Casio, probably Sears and 7-11 at some point.

Fabulous presentation and analysis, Doug! I'm growing to love what you find for me. I did not to hear the Dead here. And, just yesterday I listened to Echolyn's "Mei", a truly great piece of music. Thanks for all you do.

I'm starting to think that this may be a song by the Ungrateful Dead. Kidding kidding. I know it's not directly them. At least I don't think soπŸ€”
