Doug, if you think Neverland is sad you need to listen to 'Sky Above the Rain' by Marillion. It's the most moving song I know, and brilliant as well

Alex Libia

Marillion “Marbles” (with Neverland) is easily my all time favourite album by this great band. I love “Fantastic Place” even more, but I agree that this live performance of “Neverland” was beyond fantastic!!!👍🏻👏🏻😁 @Doug

Karl Stubsjoen

A wonderful celebration of non-roots rock music. It fills me me with hope and aspiration, and it's a wonderful way to say goodbye to 2024.

The “bad for trains” line in “50 Words For Snow” probably needs a footnote for those across the pond. It’s a reference to a notorious service announcement that trains had been delayed/cancelled because of “the wrong sort of snow” on the line https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_wrong_type_of_snow

Absolutely! Its on the Master List, flagged for the EPL. One day. I think its about time it became bold, red, big typeface, flashing, and its day arrives...? C'mon Doug, you know you want to! 😉 Trouble is, there is so much OTHER amazing and equally-deserving stuff on the Master List as well...! As well as so much that has not yet made it to the list. Doug said he had sometimes worried about running out of first rate material? Er...

It was great. Very fun to see you react to PFM for the first time. If you want to explore more pasta prog, I believe Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Le Orme and Museo Rosenbach should be next. I think we can expect some more Doug reactions to Gentle Giant and Camel, two wonderful bands. Sweden is also a country that needs more love. Anglagard and Anekdoten were two pioneers of the prog revival in the 90's. I think you'd dig them both.

Jean-Michel LaFontaine

I think Moonmadness has gotten 2nd place like 3 or 4 times now? I feel like Doug should stop putting it in polls and just listen to it.

Progressive rock was pretty big here in Italy back in the 70's and PFM was surely one of the best. Another one I'd suggest paying attention to is "Area" , they were not only one of the best italian bands of the time but also one of the best bands in the world , their musicianship was outstanding. P.S . You should really consider doing an EPL for "Acquiring the Taste" , its a masterpiece ;P

Hetfield Ninno Davide

The harpsichord and flute section of the PFM track reminded me a little bit of Jethro Tull's cover of Bach's "Bourree"

BRIAN MILLER

Ah, yes, drawings. With U2 (and music in general), one can extrapolate all kinds of universal themes from specific exs they draw from (I guess that's why Doug champions the phrase, "It's Universe' Y'all").

As I understand it, the song was inspired by a collection of drawings and sketches and paintings etc by the Hiroshima atomic bomb survivors, called "Unforgettable Fire"., and is more widely referencing mankind's willingness and ability to destroy.

Adrian Goodrich

That "lament pattern" on the Strawbs's song also reminds me of King Crimson's "Epitaph."

Allen

If I recall correctly (because I used to soak up plenty of U2 while a teenager), it was based on a poem/story concerning the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima/Nagasaki. . .

LOVED all this! OK, really Glad Doug heard and liked some more Camel (my suggestion), but SO glad to see so many bands I love (or maybe love even more now). Btw, I've since realised its a soprano sax not a clarinet that Mel Collins (sax virtuoso session player on SO many albums!) is playing so brilliantly. I keep forgetting just HOW good Kansas is - perhaps still the only real US prog band I know of my 1970s era, and one of my favourites of theirs. And loved the PFM offering - SUCH an underrated band, and I listened to them a fair bit (but not enough) in the 70s. Marillion... do bands, especially live, get much better? I nearly suggested "Berlin" or "The King of Sunset Town", but was worried that their "transition" album (my favourite) might not enthuse either Fish OR H fans. But Neverland: great choice! And you know Doug is a true Marillion fan, when he refers to Hogarth as "H!" So agree about Rothery. I love his "The Ghosts of Pripyat" album (hint hint, Doug...) I confess I think "Look at Yourself" and "Demons and Wizards" are Heep's best albums, and I nearly put Paradise/The Spell (live) forward. But still great choice - WHAT guitar and drum work from Mick and Lee! And I did not realise the reason we hear little of the brilliant U2 on the channel is because Doug already knows and loves them so much! So many amazing options - I nearly put "Surrender" forward. And that was a new GG song to me - quite amazing! And I am SO glad to see some Strawbs on here - I nearly proposed Grave New World. (Fun fact - their name is a shortened "Strawberry Hill Boys") What a LOVELY list and brilliant FF this is! Played it all twice already, and doubtless will do so several more times. Again, thanks so much Doug!

Adrian Goodrich

Congrats and well wishes to Doug and community! This was truly a great collection of music - bravo! And yes, Doug - no need to worry about ever running out of material! Great hearing PFM - Italian Prog is a journey all on its own. PFM actually created one of the best attempts by a prog band at a pop album: Serendipity. Totally not prog... excellent commercial songs all in italian. It is a fun ride.

Christopher Arters (relative timeworx - Mr.A)

I think I am now a Gentle Giant Fan after listening to "Pantagruel's Navitivity" ....what an amazing soundscape...that was so freaking cool!!! I am with Doug on how beautiful the sounds of this band really are unlike anything I have ever heard. This is really the second time (abeit only on Doug's Channel) that I have heard of the group. Thank You so much for bringing this to my Life!
