Doug said again, in the reaction, that he wants to get to Grave New World (and the other three) too - he may need to sneak it past the fan voting method, though, since both they and Fairport Convention maybe suffer from not being so well-known? Other than it was a SO-hard choice not ranking it first, I agree with all you say there!
Adrian Goodrich
2025-01-22 13:18:58 +0000 UTCAnd that is indeed precisely what he did! I SO enjoyed this reaction!
Adrian Goodrich
2025-01-22 13:14:34 +0000 UTCI wish Grave New World would have won or come in second. It's a great record I know Doug would have loved for its melding of folk and progressive elements, layered with interesting instrumentation and smart thought-provoking lyrics. Dave Cousins (lead singer and rhythm guitarist) is a very underrated songwriter/composer

2025-01-22 09:10:42 +0000 UTCDoug- Since it's likely "Moonmadness", please break with your convention and do each song individually. Each one needs to be savored on their own; you will thank me for it. The album is less than 40 minutes, easy to do. Pretty sure no-one here will argue with me.
Tom (the soggy one)
2025-01-20 01:25:31 +0000 UTCI think he may. He made it clear he digs ALL these five candidates, on his livestream this evening. I SO hope he gets to then soon.
Adrian Goodrich
2025-01-20 00:53:32 +0000 UTCI keep flipping between the two. Just played both again after Doug's livestream this evening. Lunar Sea still tips it for me, but otherwise no way to split them. If Moonmadness wins, as seems likely now, I hope we can persuade Doug to get to Mirage soon after? I submitted Lunar Sea for the 12 Days of Dougmas, and it came third out of loads. Next time we need to submit the White Rider Suite or Lady Fantasy...?
Adrian Goodrich
2025-01-20 00:49:34 +0000 UTCMoonmadness is not my favorite early Camel (Mirage for the win), but is arguably their best.
Tom (the soggy one)
2025-01-18 18:49:32 +0000 UTCLooks like I'm voting for the loser again! I'd love to see Doug digging some Fairport Convention, though.
Bill Brinkmoeller
2025-01-17 08:29:34 +0000 UTCI played Mirage and Rain Dances last night. I confess, I find it nigh-on impossible to pick between them and Moonmadness - and the first album, for that matter. Whichever one I listen to last (leaving The Snow Goose aside) ends up becoming my new favourite. (And that's before revisiting later work...). Usually Lunar Sea just tips the balance for me. Or Lady Fantasy. Or...
Adrian Goodrich
2025-01-16 11:00:41 +0000 UTCI gotta go with ELO, Doug has done precious little of theirs and Eldorado is a true masterpiece. Not that I don't love Camel...
Neale Brassell
2025-01-16 01:56:42 +0000 UTCI went for Liege and Leaf and then realised the mountain it would have to climb, so I switched to ELO. In fact, I believe that it is better to approach ELO via the path from the origin, rather than start at the heights of success - it's a very interesting journey and the arrival point, El Dorado, is all the more impressive because of it. So, if the voting situation changes, I could be persuaded to change my vote. NB Strawbs is in the same position as Fairport, and I would perhaps go there with others. Maybe wherever Scot Poland goes, I'll go too! Dammit! After all that I just switched to Strawbs 🤣

2025-01-15 23:16:39 +0000 UTCJeff Wayne all the way!
Joakim Skurk
2025-01-15 19:11:41 +0000 UTCCamel would be interesting but Mirage is so much better than Moonmadness! imho of course!
Trevor Cotterell
2025-01-15 09:50:55 +0000 UTCoh sod it... Doug, just start at the top and do one a week please!
Chris Ramsbottom
2025-01-15 07:20:20 +0000 UTCDammit Doug! It's like asking me to choose between my children!
Chris Ramsbottom
2025-01-15 07:16:39 +0000 UTCYou may not have heard of him but you have heard of Justin Hayward, Phil Lynott and most of the rest of the cast, for it is a concept album.
Chris Ramsbottom
2025-01-15 07:16:08 +0000 UTCIt was between ELO and Camel for me, and I'm sure both will make it eventually, but gosh dang have i been feeling ELO. Especially since they're on their farewell tour and all. El Dorado is the peak progressive/orchestral ELO.
Alex Byrd
2025-01-15 02:56:47 +0000 UTCDefinitely voting for Liege and Leaf, but it is way behind.
Mark L
2025-01-15 01:12:52 +0000 UTCWow five equally excellent, yet distinctly different, choices. I may be changing my vote several times.
Tom (the soggy one)
2025-01-15 00:48:01 +0000 UTCDoug- If War Of The Worlds wins, you're gonna want a bucket break between sides two and three. It's okay- it's a natural intermission.
Tom (the soggy one)
2025-01-15 00:46:35 +0000 UTCI know! All five are great. I made my call straight away, since otherwise I know I would be dithering over which one to go for!
Adrian Goodrich
2025-01-14 23:54:05 +0000 UTCI first read Lord of the Rings a couple of years after first hearing Mirage in early 1975. So only then did I get what the Nimrodel/Procession/White Rider suite was all about! However we individuals might rank them, Mirage has to be one of THE most significant prog albums of all time?
Adrian Goodrich
2025-01-14 23:46:49 +0000 UTCHave to go with Strawbs this time, even though I like all of these albums. 'Grave New World' was when the Strawbs ventured into more symphonic progressive, right after Wakeman left the band (strangely).
Guitar Channel
2025-01-14 23:43:56 +0000 UTCIndeed! Only took dumb ME about five years to figure it out...!
Adrian Goodrich
2025-01-14 23:34:57 +0000 UTCI am hoping for Jeff Wayne's musical version of War Of The Worlds. It is an absolutely EPIC album!
Mark Hehir
2025-01-14 23:33:53 +0000 UTCLunar Sea - Lunacy - Moonmadness
Claudio Fernandes
2025-01-14 23:23:06 +0000 UTCFirst one I heard was definitely Mirage. I was attracted by the album cover mocking the cigarette pack. Moonmadness and Snow Goose came right after.
Claudio Fernandes
2025-01-14 23:21:37 +0000 UTCI can't remember now whether Mirage or Snow Goose was the first Camel album I heard. Just that BOTH just blew me away (and still do). In recent times Moonmadness has just shaded Mirage for me (Snow Goose is still something else). But all three are wonderful, and several of their others run these three very close too IMO. SUCH a brilliant underrated band!
Adrian Goodrich
2025-01-14 23:05:54 +0000 UTCFor those not already aware, the final track on Moonmadness is called "Lunar Sea". Think about it...! I confess it took me several years, way back in the 70s, before I realised where the album title came from! (Forehead slap...)
Adrian Goodrich
2025-01-14 22:58:32 +0000 UTCI'm voting for Camel; but its a close-run thing. I bought TWOTW on vinyl when it first came out, and saw the musical stage show with Jeff Wayne conducting a few years ago. Forever Autumn steals the show, of course.
Adrian Goodrich
2025-01-14 22:50:15 +0000 UTCOh Doug, this is really unfair! I have to go with my favourite Camel album (other than The Snow Goose, obviously) although it only just shades Mirage. Ahead of Grave New World, because a superb side 1 is IMO let down a bit by side 2. No doubt Moodmadness will come second again; but these are all great albums!
Adrian Goodrich
2025-01-14 22:47:31 +0000 UTCI never heard of Jeff Wayne or heard the album until about 10 years ago, when I was 42. Been a huge fan ever since and I wish I had been exposed to it as a child
Tom
2025-01-14 22:31:04 +0000 UTCI voted for Camel, although I still think their best album is Mirage.
Claudio Fernandes
2025-01-14 22:24:29 +0000 UTCCome on, ELO fans!! El Dorado is (forgive me, y’all 😬) the Gold Standard!! 💛🌟
Margaret Barnes
2025-01-14 22:21:04 +0000 UTCWar of the Worlds..................ULLA!!!!!
zspleen
2025-01-14 22:02:03 +0000 UTCLike others, I’m torn between ELO and Jeff Wayne. But, Jeff Wayne has Justin Hayward, so my vote will go there for now.
Illume Eltanin
2025-01-14 21:56:24 +0000 UTCI don't even know who Jeff Wayne is. Shrug.
BRIAN MILLER
2025-01-14 21:45:33 +0000 UTCI am convinced the only people who aren't voting for War of the Worlds are people who haven't heard it. One day it will win. One day...
Carrow Council
2025-01-14 21:44:09 +0000 UTCand Eldorado... I'll need time on this one
Bubbalino
2025-01-14 21:41:54 +0000 UTCI voted for it
KellieE69
2025-01-14 21:41:36 +0000 UTCWar of the Worlds and Grave New World in the same poll!! Damn it Doug!!
Bubbalino
2025-01-14 21:38:42 +0000 UTCI only know the Strawbs hit songs and the album they recorded with Sandy Denny. I'll have to listen to Grave New World myself before I can offer a comparison.
BRIAN MILLER
2025-01-14 21:35:10 +0000 UTCAlmost voted for that, but the top two are so close I had to help out Camel.
Richard Moore
2025-01-14 21:35:08 +0000 UTCFingers crossed for Moonmadness...
Nick
2025-01-14 21:34:44 +0000 UTCMe too. But how do I choose between that and Grave New World??
Scot Poland
2025-01-14 21:32:12 +0000 UTCWar of the worlds is great... I will be live there this year. Uuuuuuulllaaaaaaaaaaa ;)
Michael Josten
2025-01-14 21:24:23 +0000 UTCI've been waiting for you to hear Liege and Lief. I hope more people will vote for this masterpiece / defining album of the British Folk-Rock genre
