Funny you mention that, I was at that Roxy show! It was... interesting. It was almost entirely improvised.

2025-02-03 03:47:47 +0000 UTCBruford's solo work features an elite super group, with the music co-composed by keyboardist, Dave Stewart (Egg, Hatfield and the North, National Health). This group toured and several live videos exist. Moraz's album is also excellent; however, it's more of a studio project. (Not sure Moraz's project did any live gigs.)

2025-02-02 22:46:50 +0000 UTCI was visiting my older brother and wife in LA when Bruford and Moraz were touring with "Music for Piano and Drums" and they were at the Roxy while I there. Sadly, I had no idea who they were at the time. D'oh!

2025-02-02 21:15:11 +0000 UTCHey, this is a difficult vote for me as well, except for one candidate - Roger Walter's Amused to Death. Anything from Roger Waters has been a problem for me because it sounds like he is complaining about something or anything. Pink Floyd's The Final Cut was what really turned me off of his output. I had actually bought the album several years back and then after a month or two, went to a reseller to get some money back. For me, I have always enjoyed music that has concepts that are broad enough for anyone to understand and comes to a resolution. Examples are The Moody Blues' Days Of Future Passed, Rush's Permanent Waves, APP's I Robot, and so on. But when there's a lot of complaining without any kind of resolution, especially meaningful, that is when I get turned off by it. Unfortunately, Roger's solo output, and The Final Cut is to me that kind of music. If Amused to Death gets chosen and played, I will try to give it fair listen but I do have my reservations. Pardon my complaining, lol, I guess I find that Mr. Walters gets me going in the worst way.

2025-02-02 15:12:05 +0000 UTCHi Doug, The Story of I is by far the most interesting and varied musically on the list but should Rick Wakeman win then please, please choose the original live performance recording from 1974 with the London Symphony Orchestra. Rick has recorded several but inferior versions since that original performance. Please also be aware there are some very poor quality audio uploads of this piece on YouTube and the YouTube link in your Master List doesn't work for me. 2025-02-02 12:00:10 +0000 UTCTotally agree it MUST be the original album. Even though there are issues here and there, only the original album has the magic. In part, it might be because RW lost the original score and had to rewrite it from scratch for the new recording (while the original involved 2 other arrangers in addition to RW), or just because of the atmosphere in the Royal Festival Hall for the concert when excitement about RW was at it's zenith. In any case, that's the only recording to listen to.

2025-02-01 19:20:53 +0000 UTCThat said; Doug, if you read this and JTTCOTE wins, it MUST be the original live album from 1974. The production is magnificent, even the dropped trumpet notes. Wakeman did a studio recording a few years ago, but it falls flat. The original is alive and electric.

Yeah, I listened to the radio, but this album grabbed me by the lapels, shook vigorously and screamed "PAY ATTENTION TO ME!!" in my face. It was beyond a pivotal moment in so many ways.

Not interested in Waters - afraid I can no longer separate his music from his politics and opinions - he's just made it too hard for me to see through all that

2025-02-01 17:40:26 +0000 UTCOut of all these "The Geese & The Ghost" is my best-loved...and probably is the most beautiful musically speaking. "One of a Kind" is probably Bruford's best and would be 2nd choice, and after that Patrick Moraz, that's an interesting album.
