Fan Favorites: Songs by Women Vol. III (Ep. 24)

For the third straight March, we commemorate Women's History Month by celebrating the great music by female musicians. This countdown features some of the truly standout musicians from the last half century. I loved coming back to some that I know well and learning some "new to me" classics. I hope you enjoy!

Birthday - The Sugarcubes
This Flight Tonight - Joni Mitchell
There Goes a Tenner - Kate Bush
You're No Good & Heatwave - Linda Rondstadt
Fotheringay - Fairport Convention
Edge of Seventeen - Stevie Nicks
Alone (Live with Orchestra) - Heart
Gold Dust Woman - Fleetwood Mac
Rondo alla Mambo - Sarah Willis (Meg's Choice)
Total Eclipse of the Heart - Bonnie Tyler

"The Dreaming" by Kate Bush is a pretty amazing album. It has to be one of the most experimental/uncommercial albums ever released by a major artist. She reigned it in quite a bit for the "Hounds of Love" follow up (my personal favorite). Cudos to Kate for taking chances. Again, it's quite an album...

Martin Broten

Sugarcubes Birthday is a great song... odd choice to premiere Bjork with though. <3

Robert Thornton

Always absolutely loved Fotheringay. Sandy Denny was a beautiful lost soul who left a timeless legacy with her amazing voice. 'Who knows where the time goes' definitely deserves a play on TDD.

Adie

Nice choices of women singers. Thans

Joseph Pasteris

FYI, Waddy Wachtel, who was playing guitar on the Linda Ronstadt track, is also the lead guitarist for Stevie Nicks. He originated and still plays the guitar line on Edge of Seventeen, and is on the video you reacted to.

Oops! I’ll fix it when I can.

R. Douglas Helvering

Loved Meg's choice. Must see if I can find the matching documentary again.

George Davis-Stewart

Fantastic EPL with some really unique stuff. Ann Wilson is always terrific. Fotheringay was my favorite - beautiful vocal, great lyric, and great chord progression. And I discovered that Joni Mitchell plays an open tuning on This Flight Tonight, which allowed her to make those sliding chords.

Ross Pollack

Absolute chills every time with Ann Wilson on this performance.

Original Sin is a fascinating album. Love it!

Much as I love "Total Eclipse of the Heart", to hear what Jim Steinman can do with female voices you need to listen to the album Original Sin, a Steinman project credited to Pandora's Box. It features four singers including Ellen Foley (who sang on the first Bat Out of Hell) and includes the song "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" later covered by Celine Dion.

Chris Moorcroft

You would like Nazareth they're good

Cheri

The sugar cubes are not for me

Cheri

Watched it, and loved your reaction to "Fotheringay" ... I hope more Fairport Convention / Sandy Denny makes it into your future videos

BRIAN MILLER

Hate to tell you- it's Linda 'Ronstadt', not 'Rondstadt'.

Tom (the soggy one)

Great to see a good representation of female musicians for celebrating Women's History Month. Fun Video!!

Sid Levy

The Dreaming is Kate producing her own stuff! very experimental!
