Eyes of the World (Grateful Dead) - Episode 795

The Grateful Dead operate in Mixolydian.

Andrew Weissert

I got the double CD of "One from the Vault" in the early 90's and it lived in my disc changer for months at a time. It has my favorite version of EOTW.

Bob Siefken

"So" achieved commercial success, but 4 ("Security") was his bridge between ex-Genesis front man (with Phil on #3, a great album in it's own right) and world-music pioneer. Security was ground breaking in recording, production, and writing, and it should not and can not be left out of Gabriel's cannon of influential albums. A must-hear for anyone with an appreciation for music's evolution with it's contribution to rock music as an art form.

Check out the clip of Ian Gillan with Deep Purple in Tilloloy performing Lazy. What a voice at 79 yrs of age

I would cast my vote for any of these. I have a particular fondness for Cornell '77, I used to work with a Doc who would play that show while he was doing cardiac catheterizations.

My recollection is that they played 2 nights there, with Little Feat opening for them. In the time before cell phones, our group of Dead Head friends would drive down from CT, RI, MA, and NH and we would rendezvous at the Vince Lombardi rest stop on the Jersey Turnpike. From there, we would form our caravan, and head to the show. These were wonderful shows, and I learned the great life lesson: "Never try to learn how to rollerblade in the parking lot before a Dead show, while tripping on LSD."

Steve Hall

You bet. Next time we meet.

I need to hear more of this story...

R. Douglas Helvering

Man, does this take me back. I drove 9 hours to hear them on this tour in Vegas, with Hornsby. Santana opened. Imagine 50,000 hippies standing and swaying under the Nevada sun for 4+ hours... then there was the post-concert 'campout'. My memory gets a little blurrier after that.

David Marshall

For the time period, I feel like Bobby's shorts were actually kind of long.

Jim Tackett

Back in the 70s I spent a lot of time hanging out with a friend at his apartment, smoking and listening to music. He was a Deadhead, so I heard a fair amount of them. As you noted, they're very good players, and I took a liking to them. They're creative song writers, and they aren't really confined by any particular genre. This was fun, as always, Doug. Thank you!

Bill Brinkmoeller

So great that you listened to this version. I actually saw the Saint Of Circumstance concert in the theater a few years ago. I didn't get into the Dead until 1991, about this same timeframe. Never got to see Jerry live, but I've seen several Dead cover bands. On Bruce Hornsby, not sure off hand how long he toured with them, but I remember listening to his 1993 album, Harbor Lights. You can really hear the Dead influence on it.

Andrew Marsh

A wise man once said to Surrender to the Flow. The Dead and Phish help me be in the moment. Songs like Eyes are perfect little adventures. Your typical Deadhead is familiar with melodies and signature phrasing. It's these side trips (improvising) that allows the mind to wander and explore in inner workings of the mind. "Sometimes we live no particular way but our own".

Sid Levy

I concur! That version is amazing!

There is a live version of Eyes of the World with Branford Marsalis on the “ Without a Net” album. It’s incredible! Maybe it will end up on one of those videos where you listen to a lot of songs in one video. Cheers!

Europe 72 is the Dead album I listen to most often…Cornell 77 may be #2. They are both great, highlighting different eras in the band’s progression.

Thanks for posting Doug! I know the official forum for this sort of suggestion is over on the Discord, but I have limited time these days as I am myself a touring musician trying to get my own project off the ground. That said, I think an EPL of Europe '72, Veneta, OR '72 (i.e. Sunshine Daydream), or Cornell '77 would be great jumping off points for getting a full Dead experience through well regarded live performances.
