NEW POLL for our next Extended Play Lounge
Added 2024-07-05 20:16:30 +0000 UTCBased on the feedback and voting during the earlier version of this poll, I've decided to end the previous poll and start fresh...
I'm eager to hear my first Peter Gabriel album in its entirety. I'm keeping the top three from the previous poll, and I'm adding in Peter's first three albums.
Many of you commented that you had wanted me to start with one of the earlier albums, so I'm curious as to how this poll will go!
Thanks for re-casting your vote!

I think I can partly agree with you. I do think "Home Sweet Home" is a powerful statement, though. The pain in his voice at the end is palpable - another example of how no one can make you feel a song quite like PG can.

2024-07-08 06:11:16 +0000 UTCI *just* listened to I/O today! That is a *beautiful* recording.

2024-07-08 04:56:44 +0000 UTCAh I missed the poll! Of all the options, albums 3 and 4 are the ones I think Doug would find the most *interesting* musically to talk about. Took him a couple of tries to figure out what kind of solo artist he was.

2024-07-08 04:56:02 +0000 UTCSecurity is his masterpiece, without a doubt, but 3 (Melt) has a special place in my heart sonce it was the first time I really listened to Peter Gabriel. And it's almost a concept album as it describes different kinds of mental disorders: the snoop (Intruder), the maniac (No Self Control), the amnesiac (I Don't Remember), the misfit (Not One of Us), etc. And it ends with the sublime Biko as a segue to his African inspired Fourth Album, Security. There's no better introduction to his oeuvre IMO.

2024-07-06 21:55:17 +0000 UTCHad commented on the original post that I was voting for PGIII despite it not being on the list, delighted to see it topping the voting here as I think it's Peter Gabriel's best album start to finish and one of my favorite albums in general, and thanks to Doug for taking the feedback and creating a new poll, great work!

2024-07-06 21:55:04 +0000 UTCI would have voted for 2 -scratch if it wasn’t so unrealistic by now, to have a tilting motion on mine . . So, start from scratch dr. D . . . climbing up on Solsbury Hill ! (c what I did there? smart!)

2024-07-06 14:55:14 +0000 UTC... I voted for Melt (III) ;)

2024-07-06 13:47:22 +0000 UTC"So" is a brilliant album. I don't listen to it anymore because I was in high school when it was popular. It saturated radio play, all my friends had it, I had it and we all listened to it... too many times. Doesn't mean it isn't a great album though, because it is. If others still want it to win I totally respect them loving it the way it deserves.

2024-07-06 13:46:33 +0000 UTCPG II always seemed like Peter was really trying to find his solo voice and forcing it toward that "Berlin Thing" that Bowie was also chasing. The first three tracks are solid - "On The Air", "DIY" and "Mother of Violence" - but from there, the tracks leave me with the impression that PG isn't really even sold on them.
Christopher Arters (relative timeworx - Mr.A)
2024-07-06 13:30:04 +0000 UTCPG III, for me, is a top 5 all time album. It not only contains unique, groundbreaking and amazing songs, the production set standards that were copied throughout the following decade. A classic for the ages. Nothing like it before or since.

2024-07-06 13:11:51 +0000 UTCThank you Doug! Back in the game :)

2024-07-06 11:07:08 +0000 UTCNow if you're going to do this, you really need to just start at the beginning and work your way through to i/o.

2024-07-06 08:34:18 +0000 UTCI am so sorry I forgot all about this today I've been busy I'm sorry Rock on one of these days I'll get on here

2024-07-06 03:55:12 +0000 UTCAnd it won the Grammy for best long form video 1996!!

2024-07-06 02:13:44 +0000 UTCSecret world live is an amazing live album/dvd! The band is perfect, Paula Cole is kicking a$$ on vocals, manu katche, levin are all in their prime, each version of each song has been enhanced with new ideas and music is a mixture of so and us! And papa wambo and company sing on your eyes! Vote secret world!

2024-07-06 02:11:38 +0000 UTCCar all the way!

2024-07-06 00:28:28 +0000 UTCSO is losing traction, yes!

2024-07-05 23:46:04 +0000 UTCCar is in my opinion his best solo album. That’s my vote anyway 😉

2024-07-05 22:28:39 +0000 UTCMany years ago, I used to manage a record store in the mall. I blew the speakers in the store twice. Once was when I was playing the Telarc DDD recording of the 1812 Overture, the other time was with Security.
Steve Hall
2024-07-05 22:20:22 +0000 UTCI agree with So being left off of this poll. On his other albums in this list, there are (pardon the pun) SO many deep cuts that never got airplay and I’ll put them up against anything on So.
David Kingma
2024-07-05 22:14:31 +0000 UTCI completely understand but we and most likely you know every overplayed track on the album. Good music is timeless but some music is just stuck forever in an instant in time, thanks Doug for understanding my point of view!
Stop Propaganda
2024-07-05 22:14:23 +0000 UTCThis is a more challenging choice than the first selection, and for me it has to be one of the first four albums (because they are so revealing of Peter Gabriel's creative personality). I think Security is the most accomplished of the first four while still feeling like it's a personal creative exploration.

2024-07-05 22:14:01 +0000 UTCAgree on Family Snapshot. I saw him in Chicago do that song and it took your breath away. Amazing
David Kingma
2024-07-05 22:07:58 +0000 UTCI'm voting for Melt, because there are some songs on there that I think will light up Doug's synapses in a big way. I will be happy with any of them, quite literally. Security got my vote in the original poll. It's the famous "no cymbals" album, where Jerry Marotta had to re-invent his playing style. Really sad to see that Scratch is getting no love at all. That's a great album, too. On the Air, Mother of Violence, Home Sweet Home...C'mon folks!
Bill Brinkmoeller
2024-07-05 22:03:50 +0000 UTCThe Family and the Fishing Net and Family Snapshot astound me every time I hear them.
Bill Brinkmoeller
2024-07-05 22:00:16 +0000 UTCI had that thought, but it is already on the Master List, while the earlier albums were not...so I decided to keep it out of respect. No matter which one wins, I'm sure I'll get to the others.

2024-07-05 21:37:40 +0000 UTCCar all the way... I like most of these albums a lot, but that one changed the pop world.

2024-07-05 21:34:47 +0000 UTCDoug, I have a unpopular question but how much to make "So" go away?
Stop Propaganda
2024-07-05 21:31:57 +0000 UTCSo is my favourite but 1 (Car) gets my vote now due to you having heard a few of the So tracks and I really want to see your reaction to Moribund the Burgermeister
Ruth James
2024-07-05 21:30:23 +0000 UTCAll of them are excellent, but 3:Melt was my Peter Gabriel gateway drug, an excellent listen!
Jesse L. Purdom
2024-07-05 21:21:09 +0000 UTCIf I had 10 votes, I’d put them all on PG 1 (car). Song to song it’s a riveting album. Humdrum, Here Comes the Flood, Moribund, every song on that album is a must listen.
David Kingma
2024-07-05 21:03:14 +0000 UTCI own and love them all. (Melt) is by far my overall favorite.
Robert Thornton
2024-07-05 20:47:40 +0000 UTCThey’re all good, but I just really love So. I remember seeing the video for Sledgehammer and being completely blown away.
Nick Jordan
2024-07-05 20:46:03 +0000 UTCI remember buying Car (#1) on first release. I was initially a bit shocked at the difference from Genesis. But then I realised the whole point was for this NOT to be Genesis, but the direction Pete wanted to go. Still for me his most significant solo album, BECAUSE of that. And I remember how (the superb) Solsbury Hill made total sense, once I realised that it is a real hill above the city of Bath. SO it gets my vote, even now. EDIT - just realised, I could have "So so it gets my vote ahead of So!" Although in reality probably Melt runs it closest for me.

2024-07-05 20:31:31 +0000 UTCNowhere to begin but the beginning: first albums first. :)
Matthew Weber
2024-07-05 20:30:47 +0000 UTCSo is a masterpiece, of course, and one you’ll do eventually (but may very well have heard many of the tracks). His first four albums all flawed masterpieces with a few that don’t stand up as well. Not necessarily the music, but he was still finding his sound (which came together of So). Rhythm of the Heat into San Jacinto on Security is amazing, but I think Melt as an album edges it out for me. Of course, Fripp’s guitar work on No Self Control and I Don’t Remember doesn’t hurt…
