The best version of paradise by the dashboard light is the one on the Old grey whistle test https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUcEVkfuZ9U

Thanks for the steer. I haven't followed Guthrie in the past, but spotted him from time to time, and I read his guitar tuition book and watch a tutition video involving him a long time ago. Everytime I've spotted him, he has been very impressive, and I'll certainly follow up on your recommendations.

The organ riff to "Child in Time" was swiped from It's a Beautiful Day's song "Bombay Calling". When Jon Lord told the group, they said that's okay, we swiped from DP as well.

That ELO song "One Summer Dream" really surprised me as it was so moody and yet the spacing or depth of the music was surreal. I am not sure to what affect they were trying to convey, but the music in that song really stood out. Jeff Lynn seems to never disappoint me with his music compositions, even when I have heard the song many times, their seems to always be some section of the song or instrument playing that I had missed before.

Not sure how much of Guthrie you know, but he was the guitarist on the Steven Wilson Raven and Hand. Cannot. Erase albums. Definitely worth a checkout on Doug's EPLs. Everything by The Aristocrats is not only fun, but top notch musicianship. If you like orchestral music paired with this trio check out their 2022 album.

This was a lovely listening time. Absolutely right that the genius of Brian Wilson's Good Vibrations should top the list. Interesting version of it from Smile rather than the classic version. Apart from Good Vibrations, I thought June would be the stand out track - a recent discovery of mine following through from some Doug EPLs, and a wonderful track. However, the stand out discovery was the Flatlands by the Aristocrats. I've been aware of Guthrie Govan for some time, but this demonstrated to me that he is the heir to Jeff Beck. Not only can I hear JB in GG's playing, but he bows to no electric guitarist in his mastery of the instrument. He may be the new no 1 guitarist's guitarist. Loved so many tracks - The Hissing of Summer Lawns was not new to me, but, like so often with Doug, re-introduced music to me with a new appreciation. Summer, BTW, is not over! We are at the height, and there's a beautiful late summer to enjoy.

"Flatlands" was an unexpected great surprise. I also enjoyed Joni Mitchell -- I don't really know her work!

What I love about watching Mungo Jerry's "In The Summertime" is just the sheer joy that sparks from their faces when they're playing.

Good shout to whoever nominated it🙂👍

Maybe try it for the daily Doug? Not too hopeful as I submitted walk on by for last years summer songs FF and down in the sewer since then but you never know ….

There's still a little bit of summer left

Although this was your first experience of listening to It's A Beautiful Day I can guarantee you will recognise one of their other tunes immediately on hearing it.

Mungo Jerry were far from a one-hit wonder in the UK, having another number one with "Baby Jump" plus two more in the top ten. Re "lay-by"; "a place at the side of a road where a vehicle can stop for a short time without interrupting other traffic: We pulled into a lay-by to look at the map".

Great freakin pick Vendy. Probably would have not won a poll, but anything by this trio is worth digging into. Love The Aristocrats. I don't know if you can no longer say Mr. Guthrie Govan is the most under appreciated guitarist of all time anymore, but man I love his restraint. Sure he could shred like John Petrucci, but he can also hit you in the feels just with the guitar. All the best to you brother, Vendy.

on Paradise by the dashboard light, it's Ellen Foley on the record, but she never performed live with Meatloaf or in the videos. That is Carla Devito. A more extreme performance is when they did it on The Old Grey Whistle Test.

Chris Moorcroft

Shame Peaches didn't get enough votes but some good competition so looking forward to this video 🙂

So pleased to see you dive into "A Kindness Of Strangers". For me, the pinnacle of the Spock's Beard catalog and a top 10 all time album. Doug needs to do the LP front to back - a hidden masterpiece.
