FYI...this was my first exposure to Gentle Giant!

Gentle Giant - Free Hand | Full Album Reaction

Comments

Yes we did listen to So Sincere live version on FF, if I remember correctly. Note that this Free Hand full listen was recorded a few years back and it is blocked on YT, that's why Doug reuploaded it. It was recorded much much before So Sincere reaction.

Einaras Sipavičius

Didn't we listen to So Sincere in a FF or DOD?

HeadStart

Foohy - we American's have been listening the GG since the early 70's 😊

Dennis Rees

I'm definitely glad I stayed for Yes - they rocked it, too!

Bill Coonley

Been listening to GG since 1973. Glad you've been introduced, Doug.

Dennis Rees

I went to a J. Geils concert just to see the backup band - Gentle Giant. Left after the first J. Geils tune.

Saw them open for Yes in 1976. Had no idea who they were, or what to expect, but Gentle Giant completely floored me to the point where I was ready to leave after their set, almost forgetting about Yes!

Bill Coonley

Saw them live in the mid 70's...from Oct 69 with the release of King Crimson's 1st and Zappa's Hot Rats (exact same date I think), the entire decade that followed was the very best. So glad to see renewed interest in this period.

It took me several listens to their studio work to get into them. Then I heard their live album "Playing the Fool" and I've been hooked ever since. Just like all complex prog, you need to give the artist 2 or 3 spins and then you will be rewarded!!

Bob Lessard

Simple answer, and with deepest respect: You're American!

Craig Millar

You asked why you've never heard of Gentle Giant and also "what's wrong with me?"

Craig Millar

This is a great album, Doug. Although I believe you should check one of their live performances, preferably in video. It's just jaw-dropping what they do with their songs when playing live. And let's not forget that everyone of them play at least 2 or 3 different instruments throughout the performance.

Claudio Fernandes

After like 30 years of listening to prog, I think Gentle Giant and VDGG are my two favorite bands. Lyrically and musically. I guess everyone hears things differently.

Jean-Michel LaFontaine

How great that Doug encountered GG through this joyous album. It was a wonderful time sitting in on this first listen. Surely GG were the proggiest of the progs! They progressed their way all the way back to renaissance polyphony 🤣. I just love this album.

Adie

I too was lucky enough to see GG around the time of this album and I totally agree with Joan Bounacos that they performed these complex compositions and vocals perfectly. I have the first eight studio albums on vinyl and enjoy them immensely. Happy to see that you are enjoying them. You have a great channel. Keep up the good work!

Steven Nemeth

Three Friends is the one with the emotional hooks....its my favourite of theirs

Michael Pratt

I will give it a careful listen , who I should listen to and love but I can’t maybe to much English folk

Gerry Rafferty

For me, GG is one of those bands that, when I hear them incidentally my reaction is always, "Interesting - who is this?" but beyond respect for their ambitious endeavors, they never grip me long term or on an emotional level. Same reaction I have with VDGG. Their accolades are absolutely warranted, just not albums I ever reach for.

Christopher Arters (relative timeworx - Mr.A)

I was lucky enough to see Gentle Giant on the same bill with Renaissance at the Guzman Theatre in Miami Florida back in the day (late 70's). Watching these guys produce live spot on versions of this album and then Renaissance is a highlight of my concert days. Amazing musicians, all.
