Why 3.5 Million American Citizens Will Never Get to Vote | The Insular Cases

Supreme Court Briefs is back with 16 cases at once. Actually, I just look at 1/4 of them. The Insular Cases are important because they established that weird limbo state that so many U.S. citizens in unincorporated territories find themselves in.

A shout out to Jacob Fridman for his help researching for this video and helping me write the script.

Do you think Puerto Rico should be a state?

Thank you for your continued support!

Why 3.5 Million American Citizens Will Never Get to Vote | The Insular Cases

Nah Porto Rico should just be made into it’s own country and it shouldn’t be state

Ariel Kahen

Agreed

Devin Canada

That would have to happen. Most of DC is just ordinary citizens.

Mr. Beat

then no one should live in DC. it should be truly neutral. the living areas should be returned to maryland and virgina

I know Republicans are afraid of losing power, but perhaps a part of a blue state could break apart or something (like Jefferson) to "even it out." The bottom line is, we're supposed to be a representative democracy, and it often sure doesn't feel like it.

Mr. Beat

That's all pretty reasonable to me.

Mr. Beat

Im all for Puerto Rico being a state if thehy want it still. DC im not for recognizing as a state it was ment to be a city that was nuteral ground not to be swayed by one party or the other and id rather see it get back to that. Im also for the State of Jefferson forming and the Greater Idaho movment. American Somoa becomeing ether Independent or a State as well

Puerto Rico and DC statehood are both polarizing issues at the moment. DC gets counted in the electoral college, but doesn’t have any representation in Congress. How do we reconcile that? I learned that Puerto Rico doesn’t pay federal income taxes, but does pay other federal taxes like the payroll tax. That is interesting. I am of the mindset that if their citizens vote in favor of statehood then I am all for it. At the very least DC should have a voting member in the us house of reps.

Naterade

Yes, I do.
