Why did the American Political Parties Switch?

I'm proud of how this one turned out. However, warning, there is some offensive language in it.

Many have requested that I cover this topic over the years. I'm glad I finally was able to cover it. Hopefully I did an adequate job.

Thank you for your continued support. I hope everyone has been safe and well.

Why did the American Political Parties Switch?

Comments

excellent video ! have wondered this for a while! thank you! bravo!

Stacey

i think the shift has already happend. bush time conservatives are now democrats in the lincoln project. and even now people are trying to get Dems like Tulsi Gabbert to switch.

Devin Canada

As I said in the video, Democrats were often guilty of those dog whistles in the '80s and '90s, too

Mr. Beat

I will admit as someone more fiscally republican that a switch did happen, although I also think some are overblown; both sides have said things that are racist today, even if it was with noble intentions.

Adam Christians

Yeah I do see another shift eventually coming

Mr. Beat

I wonder how the parties would have evolved if we didn’t have the electoral college and we used the popular vote to elect our president? At the state and local level, I still think the β€œparty switch” was inevitable at least in the south because of religion and race. It will be interesting to watch how the south specifically states like Georgia, Texas and North Carolina evolve politically over the next 5-10 years as they all have seen big population booms and have become more diverse.

Naterade

Absolutely not. I mean, as someone who favors lower taxes and the 10th Amendment myself, that would really make me question myself. It's also worth nothing that even when "states' rights" was a dog whistle in the 1970s and 1980s, it was only effective to some in the South.

Mr. Beat

Well that indeed is a myth. Hardly any politicians actually switched over. It was the voters who (eventually) switched over, not the politicians, but even many of the voters were stubborn and refused to switch, so it was really their kids who switched.

Mr. Beat

Thank you Dante! Also thanks for suggesting this topic. It's been covered before, but hopefully I was able to add some more nuance to it. I understand the hesitation about states' rights when you see what certain states have done over the years in terms of horrible laws.

Mr. Beat

So do you think that States Rights and Lower Taxes are still dog whistles today? Do you think they were ment well by what they said today and yesteryear?

Devin Canada

When i think of party switch i still think it is really talking about a myth that the representatives and senators in the democrat party switched to the republican party after LBJ signed the civil rights reform.

Devin Canada

This might be my new favorite video Mr. Beat! Exemplary! In some ways this reminds me of your short video on PragerU. Gotta swat down the lies and revisionist history... Side note: I'm personally less than keen on States' rights. I almost only hear this argument from Republicans. It immediately strikes me as narrow-minded that justice and equality should stop at the state line... You're putting out exceptional work. Keep it up man. You're rockin' it!

DANTE VERONA

Well hopefully my video contributed to helping make the consolidation seem more nuanced. I'm tired of the oversimplification πŸ˜‘

Mr. Beat

I might have! I personally don't like to call it a switch, but rather a consolidation. Conservative Democrats in the south realized their interest laid more with the GOP and Liberal Republicans in the North realized their interest laid more with the Democrats.

Jack Bartlett

That may need to be a whole separate video to explore. Btw didn't you suggest this video topic?

Mr. Beat

What also doesn't get alot of mention is the divide in the GOP. the elite east coast fiscally conservative professional class which was more socially liberal internationalist wing VS the great plains/western fervently anti communist petite bourgeoisie farmer, small capitalist socially conservative. In many ways George HW Bush was the most Republican person ever: elite family from the east coast who made his fortune in Texas oil.

Jack Bartlett

Thank you so much! 😊

Mr. Beat

It took no small amount of fortitude to make this video. Very well researched and presented.
