Mission and intent
Have you ever stopped to think why the covers always tend towards similar concepts? Apart from this being related to marketing.

The Hobbit has several objects or characters that are the main focus of attention. It all depends on the artist (and editor).

My initial idea is to bring something new.

Mixing graphic design with illustration is something that works and my goal is not only to create a different cover, but one that attracts and tells a more concrete story. But in a more dynamic and visual way.

It has to be a fun image that is both functional and easy to read.

SEARCH
Searching for references is undoubtedly the easiest step in this project.

Many artists have made their own version of  and, of course, since I was challenged, I will not be less.

From old and early edition covers, to more current versions. I will have to reject ideas or reuse those that can be improved.

REFLEXION. Path of darkness? No handsome dwarfs allowed

One of my main ideas was to create a dark cover.

In case anyone wasn't aware, The Hobbit was supposed to be a story for children, for Tolkien's children, more specifically. But it's not made of SHINES and UNICORNS. It's creepy.

As cinema references, we have the rotoscoping of The Lord of The Rings, dark as it turns out in an unnatural style, (thanks, rotoscoping, you're scary).

On the other hand, we also have the more extended, epic and dark version of The Hobbit trilogy, loved and hated in equal parts.

Why dark? Because there's nothing like a good cup of scary stuff....
