The Koala Update (Patreon Exclusive)

[Patreon Exclusive]
Hello Patrons,
To wrap the year up we've got an exclusive video for you.

We're planning to do more of these in 2025. When a topic doesn't quite have the facts and figures behind it to make a main channel video, but it's something we (and you) are very passionate about we want to give a lay-of-the-land update to you Patrons.

In this case, it's Koalas, Forestry NSW and the Great Koala National Park.

This is something we've been following closely behind the scenes, we've been pestering a LOT of people about it. While there is no definite update, this is a bit of an "insider baseball" look at everything. It also gives some insights about why we started the Wombat Trust and how optimistic that makes us for some solid movement on environmental issues in 2025.

We hope you enjoy it! Yep, it's a bit of an extemporaneous speech but this is something we've been putting a lot of effort into away from the Youtube cameras, we think you'll find this peek behind the curtain interesting. This is for Patreon only!

Hope you had a great Christmas and Happy New Year from,
The FJ Crew

Yeah they're like an ''umbrella'' species in that they are widely known and loved and any positive result of protecting their natural home range environments that is successful due to protecting the Koalas themselves as catalyst for that bushland being protected: by-proxy protects numerous other species in that same environment obvs'; an ecologist explained that to me few years back. Pretty cool little ambassadors for their fellow wildlife, albeit poor Koalas have had an awful few years (again) lately. @friendlyjordies fantastic video again btw Jordan, keeping up the multi-issues plight(s) fighting like the tireless Boss you is, kudos.

Good ol' New South. Enjoyed this one. Having been one of those people who spent far too long at uni, I met more than my fair share of people who would have been much better off at TAFE.

I completely agree. As a resident of the City of Ryde, I have too many hospitals in the area. We have relatively easy access to RNSH (Tertiary Hospital), Concord, and Westmead (Adults and Kids). But in the significant growth zones, in this case, the North West, there has been very little investment in a high-level complete-service hospital facility. In my opinion, the money spent on the Ryde Hospital should have been used to either (or both) go towards upgrading and expanding Concord or a major facility in the Northwest. The land at Ryde Hospital could have been used to provide non-inpatient services, expanded access to consultants, etc., and other services such as radiology (there is one there, but getting in and out of the car park is a nightmare, let alone getting into the very tight car park spaced.

That’s a great point about the koalas being used as a mascot for all of natural area protection. I work on conservation and most our contracts for bush regeneration come from koala protection when we don’t give a fuck about them compared to everything else lol. They are a great mascot for getting what we need to get done

The other thing is not to assume overheads are a waste of money. Some NFPs have high overheads because of the nature of their work. Training staff, working in remote/dangerous locations, intensive hands on work etc. I’d be extremely confident that Greenpeace and ACF are utilising funds appropriately, unless there’s specific evidence to the contrary.

Good vid.

I think ACF are pretty good. FJ team have made many mentions of the work by ACF

THOMAS

Hey mate, I regularly give money to ACF and Greenpeace. Is this a waste. Where can I find a break down of investment vs impact?

The ridiculous rush to kick off the Ryde Hospital redevelopment before the last election was hilarious. "WE NEED THESE CONTRACTS SIGNED, IGNORE ALL THE PLANNING PROBLEMS AND UNFINISHED REPORTS"

The real joy of the NSW Forrestry harvesting old growth forest I always assumed it was about clearing land to sell cheap to farmers or developer mates. The less "good wood" found, the more land they have to (get to) clear.

DMK

Wait. NSW has more debt than Victoria!? Caused by the LNP!? No way. People say Victoria are going broke but we have infrastructure projects....

Alex Isaac

Excellent video, really appreciate you highlighting the difficulties within the process of legislation. I honestly don't think I had really given too much thought about the difficulties with not being able to get big things done overnight. Looking forward to next year's videos! Keep it up!
