The Best (and worst) Independent Politicians

[Early Access]
Hello Patrons,
For your early video this week we've got one that is purely focused on independent politicians. For those of you who have been watching the patreon releases over the last few weeks it shouldn't come as a surprise that we'll be talking about this a LOT in the leadup to the election.

There's been a lot of calls for "smashing the duopoly" and hailing independent politicians as saviours. This video goes beyond just the slogans and looks at why they're getting this glowing reputation. However, it may come as a shock but we also spend a lot of time talking about independents that we DO actually like as well.

Let us know what you think about this one, we're planning to put it out at the end of the week. Keep your eyes peeled before that for a video suggestion thread. Now that we're back expect to see a lot more content and ways for your voices to be heard on Patreon.

Thank you for your support and welcome to all the new patrons!

The Best (and worst) Independent Politicians

Comments

Jordies, it seems like labor votes are inevitable going to be split. Would it be a good idea to fill the senate with truely independent (from the majors) independents/small parties to keep checks on power? Seems like they would back labor’s commonsense policies anyway and keep the liberals and greens honest

Andrew Binning

I always thought the minority government under Gillard was one of the best governments this country has had - it led to things like Gonski, Clean Energy bIll, NDIS, child abuse commission, paid parental leave. It bears out in the data too if you look at the # of bills passed per year on the APH website that government was right up there. She was a great negotiator and the need to negotiate in good faith with the Greens meant that neither they or Labor got 100% of everything they wanted, which is how politics is supposed to work - by compromising. So if the choice in a safe liberal seat is having your vote go nowhere with Labor or backing a central-right attack from a teal independent, its very much a 'lesser of two evils' situation - but a minority government where Albo is forced to negotiate with Greens OR teals for confidence/supply isn't the worst outcome in the world. Teals at least have demonstrated a willingness to compromise by separating from hard liberal lines anyway, while Greens (as you point out) tend to be their own worst enemy and let perfect be the enemy of good with a lot of their policies. Great video!

I have heard time and time again, from close relatives, to my mates from high school, even the people who come into my work, that "liberal and labor are the same". Luckily it's public to see what they vote against/for.

aquaticlizard

I don't even know who to vote for anymore XD

SnowFlakes882

Fiona Patten is incredible. Thanks for giving her a shout out. If anyone has the financial means, definitely worth chipping in to help the Legalise Cannabis Party campaign.

Big Mac

I was wondering when you were going to tackle that juice media video. Good on ya

Jeremy Buckingham is a legend one of the reasons we now have industrial manslaughter laws in NSW now

3:38 that image is 100% AI generated. here's the highlights: • pseudo-3D shading • oversaturation of colours • uneven points on the stars • completely fucked up union jack • weirdly wobbly and inconsistent lines on the top & bottom of the crest they probs just asked some pimply intern to do it 😭💀

This video is great. I live in Bradfield and I’m expected to vote for Nicolette. She is one of the worst people imaginable to be running. It’s an electorate where Labor has a genuine chance of winning and her existence is to cannibalise the Greens and Labor vote, along with all the other teals running in liberal seats. I genuinely believed the Greens would’ve ousted Frydenberg in 2022. Nicolette put out a video on her socials where she made fun of a supporter by taking her video out of context, without credit and made fun of her by being disabled. The creator reached out to her and while she took it down she refused to explain anything or apologise.

I mean I agree Jordies, but given all the (Lib lite) Teals you just called out are competing against the Libs in seats where the ALP are uncompetitive around 6:30min mark, it's unclear how the promoting those independents works against the ALP. The main issue is as you point out the overall disparagement and lack of credit they give the ALP to the ALP's wider brand and appeal in seats where they compete with the Libs. However I am not sure if "independent media" actually errodes the ALP on 2PP. I guess your point is they just errode general support and the primary vote of the ALP with that narrative, which makes it harder for them. Thing is, does that outer suburban voter actually want to listen to a narrative that appears "partisan" towards major parties (perceived to be insider incumbents) and isn't disparaging and apathetic to the entire political process? I suspect in part it is audience capture. Independent media providers are just feeding back to their audience what their audience already believe, which is a false equivalency that because the ALP is party that occasionally wins government, then somehow they are to blame for the vast majority of political issues. This is a problem faced by parties of government - you are held responsible for failings of "the government" even when you are not in office or all the alternatives (real or otherwise) are worse.

Love how Jordies is just Coffeezilla but for AUS politics with the "I used to respected Jordies journalism until he catch me doing something shady"

Dob WoLF

McNamara - not a vote against ALP (will get 2nd pref) but a vote against my direct representative who fully supports Israel's actions

Ian Kidston

It needs to happen soon given the election will be called real soon.

Alex Isaac

2019? A cameo

You must be in an inner city electorate. But voting because of a war overseas that Labor doesn't support and has said so multiple times, (they want a two state system and voted against Israel in the u.n). You're literally ignoring all the real issues that affect your kids and grandkids. At least vote Labor 2.

Alex Isaac

I'm so happy to finally hear Fiona Patten being mentioned on Friendlyjordies, been a big fan of her for 15+ years now!

I vote Labor first then weed party second. It’s a versatile crop man. Just like I bet $100 Labor majority win.Two days later I bet $50 on same bet. It went down to $13 .I’m influencing the outcome of this most important election.

Al Goormay

Actually? What did he do with them? Is it still online?

neonoodle

When are you pumping these videos out on YouTube ?

Luca Orlando

Finally someone is calling Juice Media for there bullshit, its funny because no one in the Aus Political space on Youtube has had the balls to talk about how Juice Media is basicly the modern media landscape but on Youtube. There isn't any diffrence between Juice Media and The ABC except that Jucie Media lies about how there fighting for the "Everyday Worker" when there obviously not because there telling you to go vote for people that voted against Labor's workers reforms.

Silver

Personally, I would still independently support some of the Victorian Teals. This year will be the first time ever that I do not vote for labor as I cannot support an individual who is fine with how Israel is acting. Will hold my nose and vote Green (Agree 100% with FJ's assessment). Given the narrow margins on first prefs last time, might well see the Greens candidate get up

Ian Kidston

Where's this sit-down with Jeremy?

Alex Isaac

Yep. And jordies was involved with them in the past too.

Alex Isaac

Except if Labor gets voted in then the party of workers will do more for the workers...

Alex Isaac

Obviously but the problem that follows with this is what happens if Climate 200 goes away? Who's the Teals sugar daddy after that? At least with the majors you've got some inertia against influence but that doesn't exist with independents, they're leaves on the breeze of whomever funds their campaign. Which was why the electoral funding reforms were so important for the supposed independence of independents and why the Teals fought it so hard, they weren't independent.

Adrian Lyons

Mostly accurate but, and it is a big but, the reason I support and donate to Climate 200 is that a Lib Lite is still better than a Lib. Not my electorates, but given the choice between Monique Ryan and Josh Frydenberg or Zoe Daniel and Tim Wilson, I for one am happy to contribute to keep "Not a Victorian, Just another Liberal" out of parliament

Ian Kidston

Dude, holy kino, my dad is heavy into Juice Media, need this one on public YouTube asap to try and break the propaganda

Ralph Babet looks like if you open up his head there's nothing but custard

Great video. I was hoping Helen Haines would be mentioned somewhere as she’s been my local independent for the last few years, but I’m a little off her considering she didn’t send me a 2025 fridge magnet calendar.

Hey FJ. Off topic, but have you guys ever had, or plan to have a show in the Shoalhaven?
