When they said rent money they meant rent for the TV. A lot of people rented appliances back then. If you already know that, I'm sorry. I just got the feeling you thought they took the TV because they didn't pay rent on their flat haha.

2025-08-10 21:45:18 +0000 UTCEster Rantzen was a tv host for years. She had a distinctive smile which really showed her teeth. The misprint line was eddie mocking a typical line that Ester would say...on tonights programme....

2025-08-10 19:29:44 +0000 UTCOuzo is Anise/Aniseed flavoured, I love Anise drinks, my favourites are Pastis from France and Sambuca from Italy, Dark Sambuca which is Anise and Liquorice flavoured is my favourite, Anise and Liquorice are very similar flavours though and often confused, clear Anise drinks are all drank with just plain water as a mixer and turn milky/cloudy when the water is added.

2025-08-08 18:55:05 +0000 UTCThe word for ironmonger is probably 'dealer' or 'trader'. The suffix -monger is rather archaic and is just a term for a tradesman of a specific item, and generally the only instance you'll see it now is in cheesemonger and fishmonger.

2025-07-28 03:09:03 +0000 UTCI thought an ironmonger was a blacksmith, my guess for the 6 letter word, forger?

2025-07-26 01:48:07 +0000 UTCThe £86.23 was the rent for the TV, not the rent for the apartment. Back when TVs were expensive, people used to rent them instead of owning. I don't think this is a thing anymore

2025-06-27 20:56:12 +0000 UTCWow. I thought you were messing with me so I had to google that and nope. I thought when I was over there, the conversion rate was really close to the same. But maybe that’s changed too? I really don’t know how that works.

2025-05-15 22:27:00 +0000 UTCThe black licorice/aniseed drink is probably black Sambuca. Both Ouzo and Sambuca are generally clear and aniseed/licorice flavoured, but there is a black variant of Sambuca and I'm not sure there is a black Ouzo. Both are greek though, and both are pretty lethal :)

2025-05-15 17:40:04 +0000 UTCGreat reaction Skip, matey, me old flappers! £86 was the rent for just the TV, because they couldnt afford to buy one outright, not the flat British comedies, especially BBC comedies are known for having small budgets so they have to get a bit inventive with sets and storylines so you'll notice in some of the, especially older, comedy series theres an episode or two set only on one room with the main characters

2025-05-15 07:23:24 +0000 UTCOnly 5 minutes in but Ironmonger, i've always thought the word they were looking for was 'smithy' though i like irnbru as an answer 🤣 Back int old days before mass production, you'd have to go to a Smithy, or Blacksmiths, to buy your iron products such as nails and tools and what have you and its probably just a term that carried on long after the smithys started phasing out
