Help me choose

Had to do a school assignment creating 3 different sports trading cards, front and back. Now I have to choose my favorite one of the three to get into the next part of the project. I know which is my favorite, but what I like most isn't always best, so I look for feedback. My family was all very divided and no help, so I am coming to our Patreon family.

Vote 1: Photo 1 (front) and 2 (back) of card 1

Vote 2: Photo 3 (front) and 4 (back) of card 2

Vote 3: Photo 5 (front) and 6 (back) of card 3

I worked on this project a few days ago and submitted them via PDF file, but apparently never saved my Illustrator file (insert crying emoji here) so tonight I very quickly had to start almost fully from scratch, so there are little mistakes and/or changes on each one I will make, but the next part of the project (with the one I choose) is due in like 16 hours so I needed to just get this out for now.

Thanks, guys!

What did you end up going for, Tay?

Love getting feedback from someone with experience in the field. Those are all great things to think about! This assignment in particular is just about the look of the design, so I don’t *have* to really think ahead of it working for other teams, players, etc (though it is good to put that into practice). With that being said, do you think image 1 would go better with image 6? I’d of course change a few things around so the required border/textures match, but aside from that…

If I were still teaching media (including design) I would definitely pick 3 unless there was something in the assessment criteria to make either of the others a better fit. That's partly due to clarity of text - the back of 3 is far easier to read, while the back of 1 looks like an explosion in a font factory. The main reason though is scalability. If you had to switch colours and create cards for players from each NHL team, would the design still work? Or can it only work in black and red, and with that length of text? Can the design support a name like Pierre-Luc Létourneau-Leblond but also one like Ed Mio (1970s/80s goaltender)? The front of 1 and the back of 3 can do that, but the front of 1 could struggle with the team depending on the length of its name. You'd need to be flexible on the front of 3 to cope with different poses of players in their photos, but that shouldn't be impossible. You'd lose the cool trick of putting the first name and surname in different backgrounds, but I think the fundamental design still works. (EDIT: I also think the back of 3 is the only one with the flexibility to adapt to a 15-year career or a second-year player's career.)
