Girl Genius Comic for Wednesday, August 23, 2023

Oof. I am going to be running on fumes until after PAX, there's a LOT to do. It's all fun exciting stuff though! Well, packing Kickstarter stuff isn't that exciting or fun, but I feel good getting it out the door, so that's something and I'll take it.

Today I really need to finish getting those press releases out. I got so many suggestions! People were so helpful! I'm going to get a list together and then I'll use it a lot. What the heck, I'm learning a new skill, I might as well pester the news folks with it every few weeks.

I've also been doing a solid play-through of the game, and last night I found the most amazing fun puzzle-crawl underneath the castle. I didn't realize how far it went, and I was so afraid I'd die and have to start over, I had no health potions left and not a lot of health, and I kept getting blown up by the boom clanks because I wasn't being very careful at first. It was a lot of fun.

Ok, I'm off to work! Thanks, all!

Need to decide if chaos theory is science or magic. Maybe both.

I think it's still Sparky science and Klaus is correct. Remember, one of the defining things about the Queens is that they don't really understand the power, and that's part of the secret. *Lucrezia* seems to know more, but she's obviously not telling us. Honestly, I suspect the size change is mostly a way to regulate a metabolic process of some kind. Akin to gigantothermy, perhaps, which is why Albia just finds it more comfortable to be big. The teleportation is probably not a Queen thing, per se, but I think studying the Mirrors would glean no small amount of insight and a Queen might have the raw power to do something exceptional. It's also very probably *not* unbounded teleportation; Neena very clearly had to call for her, which probably provided a beacon. In fact, I'd suspect there's a similarity to how the summoning engine works. We don't really understand where essentiae are summoned *from*, for instance, nor do we actually understand how "other dimensions" work... and both are potential candidates for The Truth Behind Teleportation™. So, yeah. We're not anywhere close enough to the end of the story for Albia to hand us all the answers yet. I agree that this isn't much of a leap from what we knew before, but that doesn't mean there aren't more secrets to come.

What Albia's "science" assertion tells me is that this stuff is reliable. Magic has thousands of different hidden variables you don't understand and if one of them isn't right, the best that could happen is it just sort of works, but not working is more likely and gigantic catastrophes happening because of a variable being off are legendary. Does it tell me that it would be something I would count as science? No. But then most of what the mads do in this storyverse isn't stuff I'd consider science. It's possible none of it is - not even Gilgamesh's heavier than air flying machine. Sure, that works by something that can be explained by our science in our world, but the process he used to come up with it may not match what I understand scientific process to be. To be clear, that happens to be an example of one of the maybes in the storyverse, because we don't really get to see exactly how he came by the idea. It was an almost completed work in progress when we were introduced to it, so the fact that no science happened on the pages we got to see is less important than the what we didn't see before. Am I saying that when they say it's science, it's never science in their world? Heavens no. Their world, their terminology. It can be what they think science is there just fine. I don't have enough of a grasp on exactly what that is to be able to judge if this stuff I don't feel I understand is this other thing I don't feel I understand, so I really don't feel comfortable trying to pass any judgement there.

Is it a maze of twisty little passages, all different? I'm feeling a little let down by this page and the one before it. This is the whole story that's a big secret? Just that there has to be a wellspring and a flame? It doesn't sound as if Albia is going to tell Agatha anything more about her own wellspring and flame than she has already. So, queens need magic water and magic fire. We know where the wellspring is in Mechanicsburg. It'd be funny if the flame turned out to be Franz! But, how do those things work to enable queenliness? Klaus thinks it's all just science, no magic involved. But that's not what this feels like; you go through the ritual and poof, you can grow and shrink and teleport and all that. I want an explanation of the queens that makes more sense! Sorry for complaining; you guys work super hard at everthing, including worrying about continuity, and so generally things work out nicely in the end. I hope that happens this time too!

One more thing, and sorry to add to your workload, but the comic pages that were going up on deviantART haven't been posting for about a week. It's a very low priority, but I was enjoying rereading them. Please do the other things first, and then maybe get in some good relaxation, before worrying about that, though!

The lighting and colors throughout this sequence have really been exceptional. All of Albia's gold stars for Cheyenne. Excellent lore here. I think I had most of this inferred, but that just means I get to feel smug for having it confirmed. Can't wait to see what Albia thinks/knows/can figure out about the lantern! Speaking of stray items, I'm still wondering where that bubble of Lucrezia-essentia ended up. Last we saw it, back in book 20, Tarvek had it. He better not STILL have it, or I'm gonna have serious questions.
