Our Christmas tree is still up. I need to take it down. It's been such a comforting thing to see every day, I don't think I've ever enjoyed a Christmas tree more. On a side note, I am always grateful to the people who leave their lights up into January. It's still dark and cold, and sometimes I really need those lights in the dark.

So, the tree: I watered it regularly, so it's only now getting a bit dry. Yesterday, to my delight, we noticed that it now has tiny, pinhead-sized baby spiders all over the place, building lovely little webs. You can imagine my children's reactions to this. Apparently I'll be the one taking the ornaments down this year. It's usually their job. The weather has been quite mild, but I'll try to settle them all in the garage or somewhere out of the elements anyway. They should be ok unless something eats them. (Edit: "them" being the spiders, not the children. That could have been written better.))

Anyway, from what I understand, spiders in the Christmas tree are good luck, and we can certainly use a large helping of that.

Have a great weekend!

That probably has to do with the fact that they were cutting down a live tree, and had only recently started doing this, so they didn't know how to extend the life of the tree much. So by the 12th, it's a fire hazard. Also, some varieties of bug eggs would have had enough time to make use of the warmth by then to start hatching, and I somehow suspect I've only begun to scratch at the surface of this. By "I" I really mean my flatmate, who was kind enough to explain what life with a live tree that was cut down and hauled inside was like. We always had an artificial tree when I was a child, despite the fact my grandfather sold Christmas trees. Though, having heard some of these stories, I'm wondering if that was "because of" rather than "despite".

This year I learnt that 'tree down by 12th night or bad luck' is a Victorian idea (like Christmas trees themselves). The Tudors used to keep decorations up until February and 12th night/epiphany was an excuse for another feast as big as Christmas. So I'm with the Castle on doing things *traditionally* next year 😁

If there were spiders building webs and nests in our Christmas tree, the Siamese twins would eat them.

Right! Actually, we usually have it down by New Year's, because we have our big Hogswatch party. This year that didn't happen, so there was no rush.

Nice!

Oh, it's gorgeous! I'd still be, uh, very careful around it.

Spiders are great. Outdoors.

One of my favorite passages from "James and the Giant Peach" And here we have Miss Spider With a mile of thread inside her Who has personally requested me to say The she’s NEVER met Miss Muffet On her charming little tuffet — If she had she’d NOT have frightened her away. Should her looks sometimes alarm you Then I don’t think it would harm you To repeat at least a hundred times a day: ''I must NEVER kill a spider I must only help and guide her And invite her in the nursery to play."

Our tree and lights and decorations stay up until Epiphany (or the weekend after). Upholding tradition, right?
