Girl Genius Comic for Friday, October 01, 2021

Greetings, everyone, as we launch boldly into another weekend full of madness and (I hope) fun!

I'm very pleased to announce that we are teaming up with Cheyenne Wright to bring you an October side story which we expect to begin on Monday! More on that a bit later.

Phil continues to improve. We've had quite a lot of messages and suggestions, enough that I am very VERY glad that we have Chris to help oversee our communications with the outside world.  I'm bad enough at answering mail at the best of times, and I feel pretty guilty about it. Anyway, thank you to everyone who has written to wish Phil a speedy recovery! Your good wishes are very much appreciated. I want to assure everyone that we have very good medical professionals watching out for both of us and that Phil is doing all the things he should be, including taking his physical therapy seriously!

Speaking of things that make me quite rightfully feel guilty, I've been thinking a lot about how I will go about running Kickstarter campaigns in the future. The one I'm currently fulfilling has dragged on for various reasons, and I feel terrible about it. I hate feeling terrible.

So, I've decided that the next campaign that I run will only involve flat book things. This simplifies things, makes sure all the rewards that need to be shipped are ready at once, and allows me to offer all our backers book rate shipping. I'm also determined to have everything ready to go before launch, to avoid dragged-out design phases. Ugh. At the moment, it's looking like the next campaign will be for Volume 20, and also for Girl Genius: Nuts & Bolts. This latter is a collection of the extra stories we've done over the years, like the Revenge of the Weasel Queen and the Cinderella story. Tonight's art is actually the cover we're going to use for that, and I'll be adding it to the PDF version we have up on DriveThru soon. (I have a couple of other more pressing matters to see to first, though.)

I do love medals and patches and extras, so I'm planning a second, separate campaign for the year's merchandise. Again, this will give me the chance to plan all the designs out and have them ready to go before launch, and maybe let me do some fun things I haven't had time to do before. Keeping it separate from the books will solve a lot of my logistical problems so I'm really liking the idea. I have no idea how this will work out, maybe nobody will back a merch campaign, but it will be an experiment. I love experiments!

Aaand, that's all the news I've got today. I hope you like the art Phil and Cheyenne put together! Thanks, everyone!

The novels are how I found your work in the first place, so I have a special place in my heart for them. (Plus, they're easier to stuff in a purse and drag to work with me.) Thank you for writing them. I love the footnotes and the worldbuilding.

Yes, I do seem to be waffling on the title. I'd better sort that out before I solicit it to Diamond Comics!

I'm so glad! We wouldn't do a KS for the novels, though, because we don't publish them ourselves. Similarly, the GG GURPS book is being published by Steve Jackson Games, who does plan to do a Kickstarter at some point. It's really up to the individual publisher, how they like to do their releases.

Have you thought about a Kickstarter for the next novel as I love those as well.

Alex Wierzbicki

It IS sacrilege! I hereby excommunicate you from the Sacred Order of the Collectors of Clutter!

Also, have you come up with a final title for volume 20 yet? Online, you have referred to it as having the (tentative) title of "The Exorcism Engines" and it is so listed on the Drive Thru Comics website. However, within the PDF volume itself, the title is given as "The Exorcism Machines". As an avid advocate of alliteration, I vastly prefer "The Exorcism Engines".

Death ray vs. fire breathing dragon-clank. Who Blinks First?

I will back a merch campaign sight unseen because it is you guys doing it. It won't be the first Kickstarter I've backed because I want the creators to be happy and create more things, rather than actually needing the things themselves, and it won't be the last, either. (This is why I backed for the "Adventures in Castle Heterodyne" game, even though I don't play computer/video games. Well, that and there's going to be an art book.) I wondered if the next Kickstarter might be for Volumes 20 and 21, to bring things up to date, but the side stories collection works too. :) Best wishes for a wonderful weekend for all!

Le'letha

If that means Cheyenne is doing the drawing and Phil is resting, I'm all for it! As for merch, I'm just as happy not to get it. I mean, the bookmark is useful, but everything else just clutters my table. I know this is sacrilege.

Brian Harvey

That's a wonderful cover image! Please also add a table of contents to the Nuts and Bolts PDF and future print volume, which (if memory serves) is lacking in the current version.
