I think your description of Civ games is probably why Alpha Centauri is the only one I ever really connected with, because it did provide that story. That's why I found Civilization: Beyond Earth so disappointing, it's like they took out everything that made the original interesting and replaced it with better graphics. I wonder if they've fallen into that trap of thinking real gamers don't care about story or something.
