54 - Differences
The alpha arctic wolf is the leader of the wolf pack and is tasked with protecting and guiding their group through the darkness of the polar night. During the night, the alpha arctic wolf will move through the icy and snowy landscape in search of food and resources for their pack.
Caring for the den is one of the most important tasks of an alpha wolf, as it provides a safe shelter for their pack during the winter months and protects their pups during their first few weeks of life. They also patrol the surroundings of the den to detect and scare off predators that could threaten their pack. Especially during the extreme night, hungry hunters can do anything.
After Luke's dad left the cave, Baxter, who was in the den, no longer felt restricted by what he could or could not do. Now, he had been watching everything that was happening in the cave.
Originally, Baxter was brought to the den when he was just a pup, and as he grew up, he was extremely lonely because he did not socialize with anyone. But that didn't mean he wanted to chat with these wolves he knew before, and while Luke was with his mother, he walked and came across some wolves.
Currently, Baxter's body size is only surpassed by Luke's father in the wolf pack. So his current body size is just as big as any of these wolves in the den.
Baxter raised his chest, his gaze became serious and he stood in front of those wolves. But he only came to see the injured wolves who had been fighting for the most food.
Baxter knew these two wolves very well. One was Ardad's mother, who was then the little gray wolf, and the other was Anie's mother. It was no surprise that these wolves were the weakest in the pack.
But now that they were injured, they were in a very serious state. Baxter, who originally wanted to play, no longer paid attention to them. As for the other wolves, they hadn't eaten as much because it took them a long time.
Baxter's current strength is incredibly strong compared to common level five wolves, not to mention his combat experience that has been increasing. Currently, Baxter's intellectual intelligence is much higher than that of common wolves. Ignorant emotions like sympathy have just begun to appear in his mind.
But at this moment, Ardad's mother began to cough after starting to eat her fish. It was evident that she had eaten a leftover bone that caused discomfort in her throat, so she coughed hard.
This made Baxter wag his tail and show her how to cough up fish bones. Ardad's mother coughed dryly for a long time before coughing up a fish bone.
She really hurt herself, but still thanked Baxter first for his help. Baxter, on the other hand, shook his head naively, indicating that she should eat fish slowly.
At this point, Luke approached. He glanced briefly at Ardad's mother and then signaled Baxter to be alert at the entrance to the den.
Auuu!
Baxter accepted Luke's task and walked toward the entrance of the den. As for these wolves' wounds, Luke checked their condition. Luke knew what could cause these wounds, but he decided to try to learn more about it.
Luke then howled and asked them what happened to their injuries. The two she-wolves' intelligence coefficient was quite satisfactory. It was curious how a wolf communicated from Luke's perspective, and that was only through howling or growling and openly expressing thoughts or words.
That was when he realized that brown bears had entered the wolf's territory. And indeed, this type of injury can only be caused by large hunters like brown bears.
Under the polar night where food is scarce, hungry wolf packs will have to try to hunt brown bears. Brown bears will also be hungry at this time and will seek to kill some arctic wolves to satisfy their hunger.
This was simply about survival and maintaining one's own natural resources, but dealing with brown bears is certainly difficult without suffering losses like these.
At this point, Luke simply returned in silence with the mother wolf and lay down on the ground, deep in thought. During this time, he was thinking about which brown bear had a conflict with the wolves in this area.
Bears hold grudges and have a better sense of smell than wolves. It's not safe, but if they're in this area, they will definitely come to this cave.
This would put his father's pack in difficulties, so he definitely had to take care of this big problem.
Luke's mother did not know her son's dangerous thoughts. If she did, she would do everything she could to dissuade him. Because hunting brown bears, even for strong wolf packs, is incredibly low success.
Certainly, his mother knew something since Luke's smell had faint traces of brown bear blood. After a while, Luke was about to leave this place. He let out a low howl, indicating that he would stay with the wolves for a few more days.
But Luke thought of his own pack, and although they were safe because of the cave's location, he refused. But he decided to come and visit his parents from time to time in the future. He would also bring them food whenever he could.
Luke's mother, although feeling a little sad, was certainly happy that her son was a responsible leader. After his father returned, Luke left with Baxter and said goodbye to the wolves.
Auu!
Auuu!
Auuuu!
...
At the entrance of the cave, Luke's parents howled loudly to say goodbye to their son and there was infinite relief knowing that their son was strong.
By then, Luke had already traveled a long way out of the cave, so after a while, he turned around to see his parents enter the cave.
Along the way, there were many predators, and some arctic owls or foxes. But to these prey, Luke paid no attention. During this time, he had also seen some wolf packs, and among all the ones he had seen in this territory, only one was stronger than his father's.
But as he knew before, among wolves, there are almost never disputes if the territory is respected. As for brown bears, having lairs anywhere is habitual in their behavior.
Brown bears don't care about anything like territory; they just hunt where there is food and live where they like.
