Capítulo 10 – Taking Action
In these types of situations, panic would be the immediate response for most people, but Anton immediately began to review the documents for long hours until he found several things that were somewhat curious.
There was excessive information; possibly years of research were in that file he downloaded from the link his father sent him, so looking beyond that with the time he had left is not only futile but also torturous. If an incident like the Covid-19 were to happen again, no, much worse, he would have to prepare.
In this house, there was a basement that was mandatory in all the houses in the area, but Anton's house had a very special one. It was a spacious underground space that extended across a vast area. The dimensions of this underground shelter were impressive, with a diameter of approximately 200 meters and a height of 10 meters.
This provided a sufficiently large space to comfortably accommodate several people and store a significant amount of supplies and advanced electronic equipment. After the disasters that occurred with the Corona virus, Anton's father began investing a lot of money in getting the basement in shape, and the best part was its entrance, which was located in the hallway to the second floor right next to a piece of furniture.
That is, the entrance to the basement was not outside but inside the house, although there were other emergency entrances and exits, this was the main entrance because it was the fastest way to enter the shelter.
When Anton thought about this, he walked to the furniture, pressed a hidden button, and then entered the correct password numbers. After the enumeration was finished, the furniture moved forward, and a series of steps extended downward.
"It seemed unnecessary a few months ago, but now it doesn't seem that way..." Anton descended the stairs, and the lights inside automatically turned on, revealing the enormous divided space.
To ensure the basement's strength, extreme precautions were taken in its construction. The walls are made of specially reinforced concrete, several times thicker and stronger than that of a conventional construction. In addition, the walls are reinforced with high-strength steel bars, providing a solid structure capable of withstanding extreme pressure in the event of tornado-related collapses.
The basement's roof is designed to withstand any additional weight or tension, with beams and pillars strategically distributed to ensure stability. In addition, the basement floor has drainage and reinforcement systems that make it resistant to floods and other water-related disasters.
The basement's lighting is provided by backup generators and batteries that store power from the electrical panels on the roof, ensuring a constant supply of electrical power even in emergency situations. Ventilation and air purification systems have also been incorporated, as well as water filtration systems to ensure long-term survival in case of disasters.
In short, this hidden basement is a maximum-security shelter, designed to withstand the onslaught of any natural disaster or threat that may arise. Its meticulous construction and the use of high-strength materials ensure the safety and comfort of those seeking refuge in it.
Anton observed the safe with a shelf full of short to long-range weapons, some hunting rifles, and many other things within his reach.
"My father should have an excessive amount of cash. I warned him many times to invest that money, but he refused..." Anton walked towards the safe and entered the password numbers.
Upon opening the safe, there were bundles of bills, some papers that should be the property deeds, credit cards, gold, silver, and other items that Anton didn't pay much attention to.
"2.8 million dollars, the bars are 10 Troy ounces of gold each, there are a total of 100 of these bars..." Anton thought about the figures and, with a bit of research on the internet, found that the current price of gold ranged from $1,800 to $2,000 per Troy ounce.
So, at a price of $2,000 per Troy ounce, to calculate how many Troy ounces equal $2 million, considering the money in the bank accounts, Anton had at his disposal at least around eight to ten million dollars.
An absolutely incredible amount considering they had never considered themselves a family overly concerned about money. Anton thought they were well off, but he never believed it was this much.
Now, what he needed to restock the entire basement and empty rooms on the second floor of the house were essential resources such as water, non-perishable food, survival resources, communication systems, suitable clothing, fuel, medical equipment, and if possible, attending some first aid courses.
For now, the first thing Anton did was go online and directly to a website to start buying supplies. He needed to stockpile foods with a long shelf life, such as canned, dehydrated, and vacuum-sealed foods.
These products are easy to find online nowadays, and it's much simpler to order large quantities without any problem. After the Corona virus, there were hundreds of people who made a fortune selling 48-hour survival backpacks, vacuum-sealed products that can last for years, and military-grade food sold online without any issue.
Anton was in a hurry; he needed to take extreme precautions in what he would do next. So, first, he spent $250,000 on various reliable online sites. After several confirmation calls, they made sure they would bring all the items he had ordered. Anton would continue to do this with official chains. If he liked the product and the site was reliable, he would order much more from that place.
Certainly, he could use the money more efficiently, but he didn't know when it would happen, how, and where it would start. The events experienced during the quarantine were more than enough to know that everything becomes destabilized when alerts begin to be issued. The opportunity he had to stock up owed much to the unpredictable nature of such situations, and he wouldn't have any other option but to be quick.
"Yes, I need to have several black water tanks installed in my house that Anton would fill progressively and seal once they were full. He has a large space in the back of the house where the yard is, so he can place at least ten to twenty water containers, each holding approximately 275 to 300 gallons of water."
"The amount of time a person can live with 300 gallons of water depends on various factors, such as the rate of water consumption and environmental conditions. Under normal circumstances, an average person needs about half a gallon of water per day to stay well-hydrated. This includes the amount needed for drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene.
So, if you have 300 gallons of water and an average person consumes around half a gallon per day, you would have at least 600 days of assured drinking water per container.
This means that, under normal conditions, a person could live around 600 days or just under 2 years with 300 gallons of water, assuming a consumption rate of half a gallon per day.
Anton did not plan to live here with more than two extra people, his girlfriend and mother. If his aunt considers it prudent to come here, he didn't mind making room for her to live. But besides that, there was no one else with him who mattered.
"Yes, I need you to rebuild the entire fence around my house with a higher and more resistant one you can find. I also want the backyard to be opened up as much as possible without considering what needs to be done." Anton was making his final call; he was surprised that the man who owned the construction company answered at this hour.
"Are you telling me you want us to install maximum-security mesh fences in a residential house, am I understanding correctly?" The man on the other end of the call asked.
"Is there any problem with that?" Anton asked, slightly confused because he didn't understand if there would be a legal issue with it.
"It's strange but it can be done... But that's not my problem, as long as you pay the workers, they'll be there first thing tomorrow morning... By the way. Do you want us to open up space in your backyard and install black 300-gallon tanks? We could maximize the space if the architect comes up with a plan. Do you clarify that you don't mind if it looks ugly as long as we install as many containers as possible?"
Anton sighed and said, "You're right. I'll transfer a sum of $50,000 so you can start with the construction... After everything is settled, you'll give me the final cost, in addition to the deposit."
"That sounds right; I'll give you the company's account number right away... Yes, thank you very much for your preferential choice towards us."
After many more hours of shopping and planning, Anton developed a very suitable plan to maximize his needs. He had weapons, but he believed they wouldn't be enough, at least in terms of ammunition and other things he couldn't get alone.
"I hope my uncle doesn't ask too many questions..." Anton murmured as he drank his third cup of coffee of the night or early morning; it was now dawn, so he had to go to school.
But truth be told, he needed to receive the workers who would be here first thing in the morning, so later, he would come up with something to get expelled for a few days. He couldn't just skip school; if he did, the police would eventually be at his house seeking answers for his absence. He had to be more assertive with this, so he already had an idea.
"I've completely lost my mind, Dad. I hope this nonsense serves some purpose in the future..." Anton murmured, looking at the list of things he had to do."
