Chapter 18: Decisions
Why did Anton obey those people?
There were many reasons why he did, but one of the main ones is that he didn't know if any of the people present would turn into carriers or walking dead. It was crucial to understand the method of transmission, but everything was so brutal that he couldn't know for sure.
Besides, he knew that if he didn't distance himself excessively for a while, he would need to at least kill a person to make them truly understand how far he would be willing to go. Decision and action are completely different; whether he decides to do that or not is a mystery, but if he takes action instead of thinking about deciding, others will consider him a danger, and problems will persist until he decides to leave.
At least he didn't want to sleep with the danger that any of those here might attack him at night. That's precisely why he didn't want to fall into a deep sleep. For now, Anton placed the cardboard in the farthest corner from the door to make a cardboard bed. Emma lay beside him, thinking about countless things, such as how people got infected, but there was absolutely nothing rational that could warn her about that.
They weren't infected; now that he thinks about it, maybe the rain was some kind of catalyst that ignited the virus in people. But now that he thinks about it, what if they were already infected?
The people who came out of that store didn't touch the rain to become carriers, so it makes sense to think about that. Looking at Emma lying beside him, she curled up in panic because she couldn't help thinking about her mother and what would happen. She was full of panic and now particularly worried about what would happen outside.
However, in terms of the situation, Anton wasn't much better. He couldn't understand how everything erupted so suddenly. If he had considered that from the beginning, he wouldn't have been in this situation with his girlfriend. The possibility of getting out for now was nil before knowing the full situation.
Anton didn't expect to be rescued by the army at least in the first forty-eight hours, all because of the possibility of these incidents erupting in the army bases, so they might not prioritize ordinary people. At these moments, as he reconsidered what he had observed, he remembered that he didn't know how long he would be trapped in this building, so he acted immediately. It could be inferred that the network and the light were cut, so it's possible that the water will also be cut. Fortunately, he could take advantage of that possibility for now and fill two water bottles.
For now, he didn't dare trust the outside water, so for now, this is his only source of water. After filling both water bottles, Anton took advantage and filled a bucket that was on the side. The possibility of everything getting worse from this point is small, so he shouldn't worry about anything else.
In the past, when Anton learned that all systems could collapse due to a massive terrorist attack, he still thought he would have time to react. Besides, he was in a country that had one of the best armies in the world; how could he imagine that the system would collapse even if there was an epidemic of infected carriers? He believed that everything might not be so serious, but in the first place, the carriers he saw here were very different from those his father had faced.
Not only were their eyes completely black instead of blood-red, but their skin was also pale white instead of darkening. At this moment, as he looked out the window, he could see that the rain had stopped, but the number of carriers apparently just kept increasing. In the distance, gunshots, police, and fire sirens resounded without stopping, as did screams and explosions. In short, the whole situation has completely gone out of control.
"Can we drink this water?" Emma, who was with her eyes closed, suddenly asked. She knew that Anton might know the situation better, so she asked first.
Through the faint light from outside, she could see that the always-confident Anton's face was hidden in the darkness. She had seen brutality in his eyes; she had never felt that from him before, but now she didn't care; she, too, had to be brutal to survive the problem they were in and to reunite with her mother.
"It's filtered water; if we turn into monsters with this water, then I can only say that we were very unlucky." Anton let Emma taste the water; he also did it because he didn't actually believe it was infected, and he didn't want to let Emma become a carrier alone.
Looking out the window directly beside the bathroom, Anton could see that the sky had turned red. Things outside couldn't be seen, but the sound of helicopters and gunfire didn't stop.
At that moment, he soon saw something heading quickly in his direction, and knowing that it might collide with his face, he moved to the side.
Crack!
The window glass shattered, and what Anton saw left him a little stunned. What just broke the small window?
"What is that?" Emma stood up and moved to the opposite side of where that square thing was.
"I don't know, but it came directly towards us." Anton raised his weapon and aimed at the cube; he could see in the darkness of the bathroom that this cube was actually a bright target with marked patterns and moved as if it were alive.
Shoot or not?
That is the only question in Anton's mind right now, but now that it shot a blue light in his direction, he decided not to do it.
"Is that a drone?" Emma asked slightly confusedly on the other side of Anton, but she herself doubted her words.
Anton shook his head and murmured, "The technology of this cube is more advanced; I don't think it's a simple drone from its shape and colors."
Click!
At that moment, the cube illuminating the room rose in the air without making a sound and flew slowly towards where Anton was; its glows were incredibly magical, but it was obvious that it was a technological object.
"[Target found...
Mission successful!
Recognized user origin, signing ocular, fingerprint, and analyzing biological pattern...]"
Watching as the cube emitted confusing words, Anton soon lowered his weapon. Even if he shot it now, it seemed not to be a threat, so he simply extended his hand and lightly pushed the cube, which retreated back in the air and then returned to where it was.
"[You have been recognized by Cube H2A-H90-JB6H; you have access to limited qualities because it will be in a trial state. Fornow, the cube will be your tool, explaining the various Ccarriersaround you!]"
"What do you mean?" Anton asked, still not understanding.
"[The cube will be your only chance to survive; use it and discover the truth. If you can survive, by the time it comes, everything that is unknown to you can be studied!"
"Carry the cube at all times; you are one of the selected for...]"
Just as Anton was about to discover something magnificent, the cube, which was floating in the air, apparently fell off, and he quickly caught it.
The texture of the cube was strange, but it wasn't heavy at all, which was pleasant to carry. But even with many questions in his head, Anton left the cube far in front of them, and a long silence soon invaded them.
"I have many questions but no valid answers." Anton sat down without the strength to stand; what he had just seen was extremely shocking and strange.
What was happening?
"Should we leave the room?" Emma couldn't say anything about what had just happened; everything seemed to indicate that this strange cube had selected Anton immediately.
Anton shook his head; this seemed to be a strange opportunity, and it seemed that he was selected by the cube for something. But even thinking about that is crazy. Does the cube have the answer to what's happening outside? If that's the case, how could it come to that assumption just by hearing something related?
If this isn't a terrorist attack and instead is planned, is he supposed to think that he is selected for something special? It's silly to imagine that he would join the others to be experimented on, so his first thoughts were to abandon the cube.
"The cube seems to be something more than a drone; we should take it with us." Emma speculated a bit, but she was just anxious.
"How do you come to that assumption?" Anton asked, wanting to convince himself that Emma was wrong simply because it made no sense.
"Think about it; it may be that this is about an object that randomly went to a place to select someone special. Even if it's not, everything that is happening may be bigger than we think." Emma said, thinking that everything could be connected on a much deeper thread.
"You are speculating on things we don't know; it's just imagining that now we have a guardian angel who will guide us to a path of light and salvation... If we think of it that way, then what is happening is a reset."
The pandemic represents an opportunity, unusual and limited, to reflect, reimagine, and restart our world and forge a healthier, more equitable, and more prosperous future.
But what if this is not the end?
What if none of the above was something that gave us a choice? That way, possibly what is happening now is the punishment of a crazy maniac who released the virus in different parts of the world to end civilization like this.
If you think about it now, what happened before this was a pandemic that could have been a simple test of whoever was behind what is happening now; he didn't know, but Anton also didn't need to know.
The convid could have been a test; it was indeed successful because it reached all parts of the world in less time than everyone thought.
Looking at his extensive situation, Anton decided to wait, but not for long. He wanted to know if the army would take control of the situation, but if it doesn't now, after that knowledge, they should act under the knowledge that the system has been lost.
They would be alone, and at that moment, they would have to get home no matter what.
"Don't tell anyone about the cube; it may be an important tool." Anton, for now, kept the cube close; he wanted to study it and understand the meaning of its sudden appearance. Unknowingly, when Anton held the cube, it glowed slightly and then went off.
