Chapter 29: Skipping Classes
It was already night, and Ethan was walking alone through the forest, carrying a bag with large raw meat chops for the female coyote that had visited him yesterday.
He didn’t know why he was doing it; he simply decided to feed this coyote, which was uncommon in this part of town. To be honest, he had nothing better to do, so this would be his way of distracting himself.
"Well, prime meat again; haven’t I kept my promise?" Ethan looked at the blue-eyed female coyote and placed the meat on the ground, careful not to drop it directly into the mud.
The female coyote, seeing the food, didn’t hesitate for a second to devour the meat, which was truly delicious.
"Tonight was complicated; I had to go against everything I believed was right, so the rumors about my new behavior have spread far." Ethan pulled out a small bottle of wine and began to drink it.
He wanted to smoke, but he would only do so if the drugs he took weren’t enough to relieve the stress. "Today, I didn’t kill a dark entity; I think I’m improving."
"The ironic thing about all this is that it’s my student. How could I kill my student?" Ethan smiled ironically at the idea, which amused him somewhat.
But even though Ethan was talking, the female coyote was focused on her delicious meal, something she rarely had the chance to enjoy.
Ethan smiled and said, "Of course, you wouldn’t be able to respond, so take your time with your meal."
Rrrr!
...
The next day, Ethan woke up early, having slept better than he initially thought he would.
"I knew this would happen," Ethan said as he reviewed the morning documents that had been sent to him from the central base.
This time he had to move quickly; he needed to tend to Derek and leave Scott in his care to avoid killing him outright. It was easy to locate that werewolf since a satellite had him tracked, so it would only be necessary to send a drone to know exactly where he was.
"Are you sure you want to go personally?" Sebastian doubted whether it was really necessary for a regent like Ethan to worry about such small details.
Ethan nodded, knowing that no one else was better prepared to handle this negotiation.
"I’m leaving; inform me of any persistent issues that require my attention."
Sebastian adjusted his glasses and said, "My job has always been exactly that, my lord."
...
In a forest, Derek was staring at the grave where he had buried half of his sister, who had been mysteriously killed.
He had followed the werewolf’s trail and found his beta, but beyond that, he hadn’t found anything else.
"I will avenge you, sister." Derek murmured, about to leave, when he heard a voice behind him.
Ethan, who had walked up, spoke in a calm voice, "I can help you seek revenge."
Derek’s blood ran cold; he didn’t know when or how someone had approached within a few meters of his back without him noticing.
"I’m very sorry for your loss. As consolation, I bring you all the remains of your sister that you’ve surely thought about recovering." Ethan pointed to a black coffin containing the other half of Laura Hale, which the police had.
Derek showed no emotion; instead, his eyes gleamed, and his fangs appeared menacingly. "Who are you?"
"Me? I suppose a friend for now, isn’t that right?"
Derek was thinking about fleeing; he didn’t know what he was facing, so that was his first thought when he saw Ethan in a neat black suit with a katana sheathed in his left hand.
Ethan pulled a black coin from his pocket and tossed it to Derek, who caught it, but as soon as his hand touched the coin, it began to burn his skin.
"My name is Ethan Winchester. Nice to meet you, Derek Hale."
"A regent..."
"I’d prefer if you just used my name, and as you’ve noticed, I come in peace. I know where the man who killed your sister is, and in fact, he’s about to fall into our hands." Ethan said as he caught the coin Derek had thrown back at him.
But even though Derek recognized Ethan’s identity, he didn’t show trust and asked, "What makes a regent interested in a small town like this?"
"I’m just on vacation, and this situation got involved in the process. I’m sorry for the loss of your family, but I promise I’ll make sure you get justice." Ethan said, raising his right hand and offering a hunter’s oath.
Derek’s expression softened, and he asked, "What do you want in return?"
