Hunter, Don't Shoot My Friend

Chapter 94: Field Investigation [1]

“What do you mean by they left you a message?” Stiles, sitting in the passenger seat, asked Ethan, who was driving.

Ethan took a moment to think before responding, “I’m not a good man, Stiles. To supernatural creatures and demons, I’m what we know of them as monsters. That’s what my family made me, and after losing my childhood friend to a vampire, nothing stopped me.”

Stiles had heard parts of this story from Liam, and Scott had shared more after hearing it from Derek.

“I killed every one of them I came across, no matter how many I had to take down or the mess it left for the organization to cover up. Even though I’m trying to change now, my past has followed me to this town, and it seems someone is out for revenge.” Ethan drove faster but then asked, “By the way, how much longer will your friend keep hiding in the back seat?”

“What friend?” Stiles asked sarcastically as he looked back.

Scott awkwardly sat up from the back seat and said, “Professor, Derek said I could be of help.”

“Don’t lie. He wouldn’t send you if he was really worried about me,” Ethan said, glancing in the rearview mirror.

“He needs help; he doesn’t know how to tell his girlfriend’s dad that he’s a freaking werewolf. And my brilliant idea of handling it would probably end with a big silver bullet in the head.” Stiles got a bit agitated by this; his friend had become a total idiot when it came to love.

Scott looked a bit downcast, unsure of what to do, so he hoped to earn the respect of a hunter by doing what Stiles does. He added, “I want to build a good reputation. I’ll do things right, not like other dark entities.”

“Or we could tell Derek to bite Allison secretly. That way, you’d have your she-wolf without having to deal with her family.” Ethan smirked slightly as he said this; these kids were truly good medicine to calm him down.

Stiles, hearing this, asked, “Can we do that?”

“I’m not turning my girlfriend into what I am now.” Scott felt ashamed even thinking about this possibility, though it wasn’t a bad idea.

Seeing things getting out of hand, Ethan said, “Relax; this is just a test. You’ve done well so far, so you can come along. Just stay close and don’t cause us any trouble.”

Stiles smiled slightly with pride. He was now the alpha of Scott, the town’s werewolf, and his friend was like a little orange cat that followed him everywhere, even to the bathroom.

When he thought of that, he shook his head slightly. What kind of issues does he have to be thinking of things like this?

“Alright, Stiles, you, who will be my future right-hand man in this town, should fill your friend in on the investigation we’re about to undertake.” Ethan knew Stiles was better than he appeared.

Scott couldn’t believe his friend was so involved in this world. When he remembered it was to prevent their teacher from killing him, a sweet shiver ran down his spine.

“I’m not into guys,” Scott suddenly said.

Ethan and Stiles were stunned; even the car came to a halt in the middle of the road, surrounded by nothing but trees and squirrels.

“Thanks for the info, but we don’t care.”

“You’re embarrassing me. Where’s your head at?” Stiles forced a smile as he looked at his friend, who apologized quietly.

“What do I have to do?”

“Identify if this is a case involving a dark entity. Just ask the right questions, and I’ll know if you’ve got the talent,” Ethan said as he resumed driving, still bemused by one of his student’s odd remarks.
