Reacting To SKAM Season 3 - Episode 1

Well its finally happening... catch you down in the comments ❤️

Comments

Seriously, if you ever come to Oslo, Norway, I will take you to Hartvig Nissens VGS, my old High School where SKAM was filmed. And I can show you all the locations 😀 Thank you for making this Patreon such a great and safe space to be 🩷

Katie Greet

Henrik -- thanks for the insight.

Douglas Rayner

Holy fuck, didn't know you had all episodes on Patreon until now, otherwise I'd have subscribed earlier. I've never ran so fast from YouTube to Patreon ever!

Henrik Schröder

Super old thread, sorry, but the reason the subtitles say "hooking up" is that it's the exact word these Norwegian kids used, and Norwegian adults watching the show were just as perplexed by it as you! What happened is that Norwegian kids loaned the English word into Norwegian, and altered its meaning. When they say it it means "making out" to them, but you - an adult - is supposed to be confused by how they're using it. There's a line in season 2 where the writers had to explain this to the audience by having her going "Everyone knows hooking up just means making out!" Well, yeah, 16-year-old Norwegian kids "know" it, the rest of us don't agree. :-)

Henrik Schröder

Once you have finished skam, there’s alot of extra material to be found.. Like the character’s insta-accounts, sms-conversations, really funny blooper-videos for all seasons, a youtube-channel and a video that one character made for another 🫠 ⚠️Be aware of spoilers though!

annanas

Also, I too think ‘hook up’ means exactly what you said, so I don’t think it’s a cultural thing. Yes, ‘making out’ would be right and ‘snogging’ is what I thought was a rather dated British expression until I heard Kit Connor using it in an interview where he was being asked about the awkwardness of kissing Joe on screen and he talked about ‘snogging’ when you have crew and a lot of people in the space with you. This was definitely the expression when I was at school too, so it’s lasted a very long time!

Graham & Ruth May

🤣

Graham & Ruth May

Definite second place award!

Douglas Rayner

No. That’s Omar, Douglas.😂❤️

Graham & Ruth May

As someone suggested, I decided to binge watch season 1 and 2 before viewing this. I got so caught up, I continued with season 3, and I'm starting season 4. Will try to avoid any spoilers, but it was really helpful to have watched season 1 and 2 to get some context with all the characters before starting season 3. Someone was commenting on the English translations in these foreign productions. I was surprised that the subtitles keep using the term "hook up" for what clearly is kissing, in public, fully clothed. For me (an American of a certain age), "hook up" always meant sex in some form. "Making out" would be my translation of that behavior. Is this just a cultural thing? Oh, and by the way, Isak has the most kissable lips I've ever seen ;-)

Douglas Rayner

No I totally get that Ruth, I admire young royals more than any other show. Maybe skam is my heartstopper 🙃

annanas

This is a great recent one, with English subtitles. Audio only but very funny and Omar is always worth listening to of course ❤️ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDRMJGjDFxg

Graham & Ruth May

You are welcome! Now I'm listening You"ll be back on repeat... LOL!

Ingrid Machado Pena

I have just watched this and it’s LOVELY, so thank you for cheering up a bleak, rainy, windy day in Cornwall during which I have done nothing at all interesting except all my housework listening to Omar on my Spotify playlist! 😂❤️

Graham & Ruth May

This one here: https://youtu.be/146HZNMrZYM "You"ll be back, soon you"ll see, you remember you belong to me". Ahhhhhhhh!!!!!! 😂😂😂

Ingrid Machado Pena

No, Ingrid, I don’t think I have? Where can I find it? ❤️

Graham & Ruth May

Ruth, have you seen the video where Omar says which song makes him think of Edvin? I'm just dying! hahaha

Ingrid Machado Pena

The trouble is, annanas, that is exactly the way I feel about Young Royals.😏 I have a terminal case of Omar, Edvin and everything associated with the series and I am pretty sure that the only treatment available is season 2 of Heartstopper. Even that will not be a complete cure. I am going to watch episode 2 before I decide, though as I don’t want to be unfair to Skam on the basis of just watching one episode.

Graham & Ruth May

Thanks for the Stephen Colbert interview, I couldn’t find it myself and we only got the STV interview which was with Tom Bradbury. I’ve got the audiobook in my audible library ready to listen to 👍

Audrey Gunn

I think skam handles the soundtrack in a simular way to YR. Rewatching skam I even realized the music choice is sometimes a hint to what will happen later in the season. I just hope you don’t give up on it too easily, it will handle some very important subjects. Although I get that it’s not for everyone.. this is just me being jelous and wishing I could watch it again for the very first time..🫣

annanas

I agree completely, Dennis. On screen and off, they set the bar extremely high. Partly, that’s because of their closeness in my opinion, which translates into incomparable chemistry on screen and they are also great actors who have become very invested in their roles. But I also think that the series is so well written, (that’s particularly important to me, a former English teacher) the music choices and cinematography so good that I am finding it difficult to give Skam a fighting chance. I am being very honest here and will probably have other people shouting at me in the comments, but if there was anything else to watch at the moment, I wouldn’t be bothering with it at all. Still thinking that to be fair, I should watch episode 2….😬

Graham & Ruth May

They are sooo cute together! And sooo fun to watch! =) https://youtu.be/146HZNMrZYM

Ingrid Machado Pena

I finished season 1 yesterday. It wasn't bad... It was kind of ok, I guess. Season 2 is getting harder to watch... The story is a bit boring for my taste, but I keep going expecting season 3 to be a game changer as you guys said is the best season. Sooo, I'm on my way. =)

Ingrid Machado Pena

Yes, Ruth, three seasons it is. But it was fun to speculate on their future lives. It's quite extraordinary how involved we've all become with these characters and, for that matter, the amazing young men who play them.

Dennis Verner

Having watched skam a long time ago, I never really understood the comparisons to YR either. Although both shows have that typical realistic/melancholy vibe like most nordic productions. They also share a lot of stylistic (? not sure that's the right word) choices, like the texts on the screen and multiple things/storylines going on/developing in the same frame or scene. I actually remember Lisa posting a story recently where she was on a panel or something like that with Julie Andem who created skam. Anyway, I bet if you put YR expectations to the side, you will be hooked on skam by ep. 3. The writing is so good it's almost ridiculous at some points, but you have to pay close attention. I guess if you don't know the language it might be hard to follow at times, so much going on..

annanas

Another attempt to recreate the horror movie night in season 1 episode 2 when Simon sat next to Wilhelm and afterwards they kissed for the first time? 😂 I can’t easily picture Omar in a horror movie, but it’s certainly different from his YR role!

Graham & Ruth May

Ruth - Omar has being acting in a recent horror movie, yet to be released.

Michael

Wouldn’t it be great to have more seasons but Lisa said she always envisioned it being in 3 parts. Also, I think that both Edvin and Omar might be relieved by that, in a way, for fear of only being known for Young Royals while they are both young and ambitious for other opportunities. I also have a feeling that Simon’s future might well point towards music and I wonder if something about that might feature in season 3. Even speculating about season 3 is making me nervous so I am going to stop doing it! 😬

Graham & Ruth May

I would love that, Dennis! Season 4, 5, 6, 7, 8... LOL! And yes, Bekki, I wanted to hug Wille many, many times throughout the series. ♥️

Ingrid Machado Pena

Lisa won't dissapoint us! =)

Ingrid Machado Pena

What is going to be interesting with regard to Harry is something I have speculated about to myself concerning the future story in Young Royals. I have no idea what storyline season 3 will take. So far both seasons have been in the same time frame. Season one was Wilhem's first year at Hillerska. Season two was right after Christmas break. I'm assuming season 3 will pick up right after the speech. But when Wilhelm is 18 along with the Queen's "promises", Wilhelm will graduate. He will also probably enter the military. (August was finding out about that much to his shock) There is no mandatory military service in Sweden but it sort of is for the Royal family. England is the example and in the case of YR, Erik was in the military. We will unfortunately not get to find out (I think) but it would be fascinating to see the complexities military service adds to Wille and Simon's relationship. Would Simon enter the military as well? Would Simon be off pursuing a career in musical performance? I see seasons 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8! LOL

Dennis Verner

I think you’re right, Dennis about being spoiled by Young Royals. It’s just so completely excellent in every way that I am unsure if I am going to persevere with Skam, but I am going to see what I think of episode 2 and then decide. It would take an awful lot to match what Lisa has created and although I am up for watching new things, episode 1 didn’t impress me. 🫤 Heartstopper will hopefully be with us for season 2 in the spring so it’s good to have that on the horizon. 🥰

Graham & Ruth May

I am currently listening to Prince Harry's new book, "Spare". I can't help but see parallels between his story and Wille's, as far as being a part of a royal family. Just watched an interview Harry did with Stephen Colbert and there is a section where they talk about grief that sadly shows how accurate it's portrayal is in Young Royals. Harry also speaks about just wanting to receive and give hugs and being denied, or starved, for that physical touch. Again, it shows just how emotionally accurate the storytelling is in Young Royals. I find myself wanting to hug Harry several times throughout this interview, much the same as I just wanted to hug Wille several times throughout the series. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6l0ObY2XVM

Bekki Babineau

Jackie, I really love your reactions but I won't be following this. For those folks who love it, good, please enjoy. I think it's awful. I was going to write more of an explanation but let me just say I think I am spoiled by Young Royals. Some people have compared this to YR but really? An LGBTQ plotline alone does not a good show make. YR season 3, please hurry.

Dennis Verner

I am just going to put my faith in the boys and their love for each other. I may have to find out from someone else if it’s a happy ending before I actually watch season 3. If it isn’t, I may have to part company with Young Royals and make the final scene of season 2 my own, personal ending! Seriously!🙃

Graham & Ruth May

Sorry, Ruth! LOL I'm with you!

Ingrid Machado Pena

I thought I read somewhere that the UK did their own version of 'SKAM', but it was dropped fairly early on for reasons I'm not certain about. That was a shame as I would have been interested to see how the Brits would have handled the storyline. Maybe it was too ahead of its time and the production companies chickened out? I think we've got the likes of 'Young Royals' and 'Heartstopper' because 'SKAM' paved the way for those programmes to be produced.

Michael

I don't think I can prepare myself for this possibility. LOL It does make some sense but, at the same time, it would go against of what the show is questioning, don't you think? Traditions and all that...

Ingrid Machado Pena

Nooooo! I can’t! I don’t believe that Lisa would inflict this agony on us. 😔 I may need long-term therapy if this turns out to be accurate. For the moment, I am going to pretend that I didn’t see this…

Graham & Ruth May

Laura - just curious, but without giving any spoilers away here, what was your reaction to that final 6 minutes of episode 9, season 3?

Michael

Oh. My. Goodness. STOP. I don't think my heart could take it. LOL But it does make sense when you look at the bigger picture and the Nordic culture, ways of viewing love (like älskar vs. kär), and storytelling. Ugh. I need to start preparing myself for this possibility....

Bekki Babineau

Maybe I should stop reading some comments on youtube... LOL! "Loved your reaction. Sorry but I totally forgot you were still reacting to YR2. One thing though that won't make me popular - as a Finn/Nordic - Season 3 will not have a 'happy ending'. The American fanbase is always so strange but us Europeans don't work like that. My prediction for Season 3 of Young Royals is that it will be adult(this was more than hinted in Season 2) and EXTREMELY bitter sweet and sad (have any of the fans watched Nordic or German Netflix. In 'Dark' the main pair stopped existing.) There is only one thing that I'm sure of - Simon will live happily ever after, alone. I'm not a YR whisperer, I am Nordic".

Ingrid Machado Pena

Bekki - it was a perfect answer.

Michael

I think you will be fine, Michael. LOL But yeah, I see your point and maybe that will be (or already is) a sort of side effect of creating space and new opportunities for recognition as Bekki said. =)

Ingrid Machado Pena

I see both sides. I think some of the traditional awards certainly carry more weight, but I think they also have a history of bias (conscious and unconscious) for all sorts of roles, content, types of individuals, etc. I am all for new opportunities for recognition that more accurately reflect and recognize the diversity and creation of new content AND that cover categories that the traditional awards don't - such as recognizing rising young talent. However, I do suppose there is a watershed point where the sheer volume of awards begins to make them carry less meaning. How's that for a non-answer, answer. Hah!

Bekki Babineau

It's great that Edvin has won an award, but does anyone else think that there are just too many award ceremonies these days? I mean I've never even heard of 'Film Updates' before. Do you think that having more and more TV and Film Award functions just dilutes the whole thing and makes the significance of awards less meaningful or less impactful? I was happy with just the Oscars and Baftas and maybe the Golden Globes, but now there seem to be hundreds of the flippin' things! Anyone else agree or am I just about to be shot down in flames? LOL!

Michael

I haven’t, but I have saved it to watch later, thanks x

Audrey Gunn

I don’t think she’s going to develop into a villain though. I am going to give this show a few more episodes to grow on me, but I am still deep in Young Royals-land and at the moment, it isn’t hooking me particularly, I must admit. Looking forward to seeing what the next episode is like.

Graham & Ruth May

Ruth - the actress who played 'Emma' (the Natalie Portman lookalike) reminded me a bit like August from 'Young Royals'. In other words she was always there when you didn't want her to be - always interfering - grrrrrr!

Michael

Fun fact: Henrik Holm who plays Even is a model in real life (no surprises there I guess) and has been for some time.

Michael

I agree with your assessment of Skam France - it had its moments but it didn’t grip me the way OG Skam and Druck did!

Laura Ibarra

Okay, I just watched this episode for the very first time knowing absolutely nothing about the show at all. I can safely say that I still know nothing about it except that Isak and Even are bloody gorgeous and I think I’m going to like it!!!

Audrey Gunn

Thank you for passing on the explanation of what Simon actually said to Wilhelm and its meaning, Bekki. It is a very moving moment in the episode and this makes it even more profound. It gives me hope for the outcome I think we’d all love to see at the end of season 3. ❤️🤞

Graham & Ruth May

YES! Much deserved, and I truly think the best is yet to come!

Bekki Babineau

Edvin won! https://twitter.com/FilmUpdates/status/1612544057510600720?t=N02GRTu1N56Fwws2aSmPkA&s=19&fbclid=PAAaYwjb0z_nOWCUeK1eOOC0PjJ1TeEfzk4AZgM1aALhn-ynMGY1jWRWKcPWM

Ingrid Machado Pena

Druck is absolutely my second favorite, too. And I think it works because it is the most different while still clearly referring back to the original. Skam France doesn’t work for me nearly as well because it seems overly dramatic, compared to the more naturalistic original, but it does have some very good things in it. Skam Italia is maybe the most like the original in specifics, even though everybody looks too old to be in high school, and to me the Belgian version, WTFock, is just bad (though I like the actor who plays the equivalent of Even in it).

Lane Wright

I've seen all the seasons of the original Skam Norway (and I also watched S3 of Skam France). I watched it the same way you are to begin with - started with S3, and then I went back and watched S1, 2, and 4. I saw someone above gave you some of the background info of the main characters. You will be able to follow along as it goes on, but I definitely liked going back to the start to understand some of those side characters better. It was definitely clear to me how Skam influenced other shows that came after it, and I understand why it also has a cult following. Looking forward to seeing your reactions to the rest of the season.

Bridget

Ohhh, about the Skam... I haven't watched the reaction yet because I am watching S1 e S2 first... But hopefully I"ll catch up soon. 😊

Ingrid Machado Pena

I felt a little lost during the first episode as well because I didn’t know any of the characters but by the second episode it didn’t really matter. Like someone mentioned above, the backstories of most of the other characters is not really necessary since the Isak’s story is not relying on that knowledge - at least it didn’t to me. As always, great reaction. I kept seeing SKAM being mentioned in other things so I also started season 3 with ZERO knowledge and it quickly because a favorite!! Have rewatched OG SKAM Season 3 several times and have watched SKAM France season 3 and Druck Season 3. Druck being my second favorite ❤️

Laura Ibarra

Wow! That's amazing! What a gift this explanation is! Beautiful! Thanks for sharing with us! ♥️

Ingrid Machado Pena

Yes thats definitely true, I love how it was done in Skam. I watched the 4th season back then in real time and I'll never forget the stress of not knowing when the next clip will be out (and then having to wait until it was translated, haha) or watching a new clip and seeing the characters new instagram posts. The whole of Skam and its remakes have definitely created their own little universe (or endless universes😉)

Nel

This is a great bit of trivia for sure! I didn’t think much of the time stamps when I watched it - I just thought it was to give the audience a sense of time. Usually in most shows, things happen but you don’t know if it’s been a week, a day, etc

Laura Ibarra

Love your reaction to the first episode. I agree. Evan is BEAUTIFUL. He reminds me of Austin Butler, who played Elvis recently. I think it's the quaffed hair, but the face as well. Just....sigh, so handsome. Can't wait for more of your reactions to this season. If I could veer back to Young Royals for a moment...I recently had someone on YouTube reply to my comment about Wille not saying "I love you" back to Simon in the last episode. My thoughts were that he had already told Simon back in Season 1, and he basically said it back when he admitted to being in the the video with Simon. The commenter shared this extremely insightful explanation of "älska", which Simon used rather than the Swedish word which means to love, "kär". älska is much more specific and meaningful. Read below: "You’re on the right track, but what is actually said kinda gets lost in the translation. The Swedish word used was not ”kär” (which translate to ”love”). It was ”älska” which is a bit more specific. It is the word used to describe a higher level of dedication to a person, not just love. If you tell someone you ”älskar” them in Swedish, that means that you accepts their choise, without requiring something back. Therefore it can be seen as quite a ”submissive” word to be used (in Sweden acts of submission [see ”love language”] is a universal way of showing that you want a more serious relationship, and there are often long cortings with acts of submision which finalise in the two people confirming that they ”älskar” each other, meaning they are ready to give up on their own hopes and dreams to live a life with that partner instead). I know plenty of people in Sweden who wouldn’t use the word ”älskar” even towards their families, because it’s a very special word often reserved for very close friends, your kids, and maybe one or two of the partners you meet through-out your life. The thing with the word ”älskar” is that it doesn’t require anything in return. What Simon said was that he was ready to have a secret love affair with Wilhelm, if that was a way for them to be together. Then he said that he ”älskar” Wilhelm. This means that Simon ”submits” his needs, and places Wilhelms needs above his own, without requiring anything in return. He just wants to be with Wilhelm, and is ready to face to consequences of that choise himself. In other words, Wilhelm is not culturally required to answer Simon here. It is not like the word “I love you” where you have to answer with the same thing. Saying “jag älskar dig” is a gift, and there is no proper response to it (not when it’s said sincerely). Wilhelm then goes out and tells everyone that he was the person in the video. Something that he knows that Simon felt alone over. This can be seen as an act of submission towards Simon, showing that, even though Simon doesn’t require anything in return, and is willing to have his secret love affair with Wilhelm, Wilhelm is ready to recipricate towards Simon, and take the relationship one step further. The word “älskar” also implies that you’d stay by the persons side whatever they do without complaining. In dramatic works this is often shown by people killilng others for the person they “älskar”. Which is interesting considering that Wilhelm held a gun to Autusts chest just a few scenes earlier. Simons use of the word here kinda implies that Wilhelm could kill August and Simon would help him cover it up if needed. The word “älskar” can also be used to break up with someone. Since the word is a sign of submission, you could say that you “älskar” a person to break up with them if that is what would be best for that other person. If you “älskar” you want the best for the other person, no matter personal cost. Using the word sincerely is truly a sign that you give “unconditional love” to another person. It is not a word used lightly in the Swedish language (well of course there is the socially required “I love you” to your parents, etc. but you get the point, you don’t use the word seriously if you don’t mean it). This whole thing kinda gets lost in translation, because the English language doesn’t have a submissive term for love, and the English culture handles love quite differently. The closest English word I can remmember which can kinda be compared to “älskling” (what you call someone you “älskar”) is “dearly beloved”. But that also doesn’t really compare to the Swedish word." Now, excuse me while I go back and rewatch that scene with this new understanding and cry happy tears all over again. BRB. :)

Bekki Babineau

Hej, thank you so much for reacting to SKAM! I hope you will enjoy this very special show and that you also find the time to watch the first two seasons (they are imo very important for season 4 and also to just get the overall picture of what the show is about, how it works and who the main characters are) I think Season 3 can be seen as the standalone season because it is the only one where the main girl group (Eva, Noora, Sana, Vilde and Chris) does not play a major role, instead the focus is on the boys. As someone already said: the clips were published in "real time", meaning if you see a clip thats dated "Mandag 15.25" the clip was posted on monday 15:25 and all clips from Saturday-Friday were added into one episode on Friday (so the timespan of Season 3 is ten weeks). Its a very special concept that (I think) has never been done before and the added social media accounts that you were able to see and follow when the show aired made it seem very real (I suggest you only take a look at them when you watched the whole show bc of huge spoilers). Love your reactions and cant wait to see you react to the whole season! Greetings from Germany :)

Nel

I can add a few clarifications. The timestamps that you see that give the day of the week and the time are there because when the show was originally broadcast, it was shown at those specific times during that week online, so that you could watch the parts of the episode at the time they were supposed to actually be taking place. (Once you learn the days of the week in Norwegian, that’s easier to follow.) Then at the end of the week all of them were compiled into one episode. When the show was originally on, each of the characters had Instagram accounts where they interacted with each other, and even, I believe, texts that one could read in different places, although I’m a little unclear about that. The school where the show takes place, Hartvig Nissen School, is a real school in Oslo, and in fact Tarjei Sandvik Moe, who plays Isak, was a student at the school when the show was being filmed, as was David Stakston, who plays Magnus. For most of the cast, this was their first professional acting job. The creator of the show, Julie Andem, interviewed actual teenagers to help make the characters as real as possible. And my understanding of the pronunciation of the title is that “Skam” should rhyme with “mom.“ The word means “shame“ in Norwegian.

Lane Wright

Morning Jackie - apparently it's pronounced SKARM. SKAM translated into English means 'Shame'.

Michael

I'm not Norwegian, but as far as I know from what I saw in seasons 1 and 2 and from what I read on Reddit when I first watched Skam, a revue is like this big celebration organised by the school and various groups (like kosegruppa) are in charge of making it happen. It's a pretty big deal for the students. Kosegruppa is in charge of providing food, spreading love and good atmosphere, etc. You may feel a bit lost during the first episode, but you already met all the main characters. Eva (the redhead in whose home Isak hid the drugs) and Jonas (Isak's best friend) were season 1 protagonists, Noora (the girl on the video call) was the protagonist of season 2 and Sana (the girl who found Isak's drugs) is the protagonist of season 4. Apart from them, there are Vilde (the blond leader of the kosegruppa), Magnus and Mahdi (part of Isak's group of friends), Isak's roommate Eskild, that's about it.

Ivalani

Well, this was interesting, watching a show about which I know nothing, and watching your reaction to it, with you approaching it from also being in the dark about it! 🤔 I like it, feel that the two guys who are clearly the main focus are quite charismatic, particularly Even, find the Natalie Portman lookalike a bit annoying but think she’s probably going to be important. ( And I’m with you, my college experience was a million miles away from this! 😂 ) This feels like a show that it’s going to take me a while to get into properly, but I was the same with Young Royals then I got completely hooked, so we’ll see, but it’s good to be watching something completely new. Looking forward to more!

Graham & Ruth May
