Reacting To SKAM Season 3 - Episode 5

As promised beautiful people... I am a couple of episodes ahead now as I filmed extra to see me through the trip to Stockholm and I have to say... SKAM is definitely worth keeping watching!!! ❤️

Comments

i know i'm 7 months late to watch this reaction, but im just watching it now. i originally watched SKAM in 2017 or so and there was a lack of english subs around then or they were really put together. i think it's great to see what eskild said to isak in this episode. it's something that isn't really talked about in the media or shows of this genre AT ALL and it's great that there was a very serious discussion (or lecture) about the sacrifices, pain and battles people have gone through in the past just to be themselves.. and essentially, making it easier now than it has been in the past for anyone to be themselves. i found that to be a really moving moment in this series and i haven't seen dialogue quite like it in anything else.

Haha, gotta love coming into the comment section and finding stuff I wrote a long time ago. I'm glad you liked the explanation, that piece was really tricky to translate.

Henrik Schröder

could you elaborate on that? I was double tasking while taking a second watch along but I didn't catch it edit: sorry im dumb I got it hihi

Aya

Thanks, Michael. I cannot be the only one here (apart from Ingrid!) pining for more YR related content. I notice Dennis on various YouTube comment sections, spreading the love. ❤️👑

No problem Ruth - we love to see any links to new stuff involving the boys, wherever it's posted.

Michael

Audrey - you'll find out in future episodes why Even is confusing you.

Michael

Evans actions won't make sense until later in the series.

Jayne Riley

I might have to watch it again then, thanks x

That’s true, and I really like Magnus too, but I don’t think I did at this point the first time around 😅 He is so funny in the next few eps, and for sure the MVP of ep 9!

annanas

I have a massive soft spot for Magnus but that does not make sense yet. I think Jonas is the only one who knows the full backstory of Isak's family and his mum so talking about stress at home actually makes sense to him whereas the other see it as a joke or a brush off.

Rosie Dickinson

Something happened in this episode that explains Evens confusing actions, it’s just impossible to catch on the first watch.. I love the writing so much! 🥰

annanas

Ha ha, knew you’d be the first to see this and respond, Ingrid! 😂❤️👑

Feeling a bit traitorous for posting something about Edvin and Omar and not about SKAM, 😬 but I think there are some of us who are just as smitten as I am and who might not have seen this very short but special moment from the QX Gay Gala. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLF6dKEIqBs

Okay, I actually liked this episode, I think cos it was mostly full of Isak and Even and them being so damn cute at the beginning!! Eskild does seem like someone he could talk to about all this, plus he told him what he needed to hear, he may not have wanted to hear it but he did so let’s see how he goes from there. I really don’t like his friends at all, with the exception of Jonas. I did pick up on the ‘they would have loved you’ sentence as well and I wondered if this was because they aren’t around or that he maybe knew he would never be introducing him to them so it wouldn’t matter. Even is confusing me and I would imagine Isak, they way he was at the beginning to the way he was at the PE class to the text about moving too fast and then kissing Sonja again at the party??? I really don’t know what’s going on at all.

Audrey Gunn

I too think Isak’s friends will grow on you in the upcoming episodes. Jonas and Eskild especially, at least they are my favorites. For those who haven’t seen the previous seasons, you have missed out a little bit on Jonas background. He has been a really good friend to Isak and if you pay attention you can see that while the others sometimes seem irritated with Isak, Jonas seem more worried even from the first few episodes.

annanas

A lot of the dialogue is unscripted. Henrik has talked about the fact that the actors could play a bit with what they say. The boys are all the correct age so their conversation, while engineered, is also just them being idiot 17 year olds. Also part of their purpose at least in the earlier episodes is to show that although Jonas calls out blatant homophobia they still use 'gay' and expect a certain level of sex chat about the girls and this is Isak's whole world and he internalises all of it. On happier notes the nose bops in the first bit were so f-ing cute I can't even. I love how Eskild approached Isak and basically just nudged him out and then everything that he said after was so powerful. Eskild is often the funny character but when he is given this sort of peice Carl Martin knocks it out of the park every time.

Rosie Dickinson

Jackie - just to say that despite the cringe aspect of the straight lads conversations, it's an important part of the story as the writer portrays the developement of individuals as they mature throughout their teenage years just as you would expect youngsters of that age to do in the real world. I guess that the writer was trying to make the whole thing as realistic as possible with typical 'laddish' type conversations similar to what would be said in reality. What I loved about those scenes was not so much what was being said (although I found some of it quite amusing), but the expressions on Isak's face whilst listening to those exchanges.

Michael

There’s a lot to say about this episode, and some of it’s already been said, but let me add that this really is a pivotal episode. The whole opening scene is just wonderful, and it could’ve gone on the whole 30 minutes and I would’ve been fine. But the scene in the locker room is incredibly important, as is the scene with Eskild, where he tells Isak exactly what he needs to hear. Isak is dealing with a lot of internalized homophobia, and Eskild calls him out on it in just the right way. I think you will warm up to the friend group more in the upcoming episodes. In the first two seasons, Jonas is the only one of Isak’s friends we really see at all, and in the first season it’s clear that Isak has a huge crush on Jonas. Jonas is absolutely Isak’s best friend. The last scene is hard to watch, but it’s sort of a standard thing with Skam that the fifth episode ends with the main character at his or her lowest point. And there was a week break after that episode, so the people watching initially had to wait two weeks to see what happened next.

Lane Wright

You didn't miss anything, that whole talking on the bed scene (btw, I love that they didn't rush that, it feels really authentic this way) takes place the day after the pool scene (and I guess Even spent the night since he’s wearing a borrowed tee and Sonja is trying to reach him over and over). However, I think it's easy to miss that then Isak didn't see or hear from Even between sunday and wednesday, and that's why he is so hesitant when Even shows up at gymclass. And yes, that was Sonja with Even at the party..

annanas

…and for future reference make a note of Isak’s comment in the locker room: ”I’ve decided that my Life is better without mentally ill people around Me”…

JLouise

Did you notice that the Jesus T-shirt Even is wearing in the first scene has been worn by both Eskild and Isak before…

JLouise

True, this is the same in swedish. But I also think it's apparent by the way Even emphasized the words what meaning he was going for here..

annanas

"I think they would have loved you." That also stood out to me, and I wondered if I had missed something. On the Tumblr website where the English-translated episodes live, there is the following explanation about that conversation (It's long, I apologize in advance): This piece of dialogue was extremely tricky to translate. In English, there is a stronger difference between a past tense hypothetical, and a future tense hypothetical. A past tense hypothetical is used when you talk about something that didn’t happen or was never going to happen, while a future tense hypothetical is used when you talk about things that could happen or will happen. In Norwegian, this is more ambiguous, a past tense hypothetical can be used for things that might happen, and throughout this conversation, both Isak and Even are talking in past tense hypotheticals. A more literal translation of what the characters are saying is: Even: “What do you think your parents would have said if you got together with me?” Isak: “I think it would have been fine. Or… dad probably wouldn’t have had anything against it.” […] Isak: “What about your parents, what do you think they would have said about me?” Even: “I think they would have loved you.” Keeping the past tense for the entire dialogue in English is wrong. It makes it sound like they are never ever going to come out to their parents, as if they wish they could, but can’t. But that’s not what they mean, they are discussing how their families are going to react when they make their relationship official. So why wasn’t this script written using future tense hypotheticals in Norwegian? It wouldn’t have been wrong, it would have had the same meaning on the face of it. But I think that this was on purpose, I think Julie Andem wanted this to be ambiguous, she wanted to hide subtext in this dialogue. Because in hindsight, you can read Even’s parting words either way: “I think they would love you” (when you get to meet them) “I think they would have loved you” (but you’re never going to meet them) Switching this entire dialogue over to future tense hypotheticals in English makes it closer to the apparent meaning of what they’re saying. But it completely loses the subtext, the ambiguity, the double meaning of Even’s words. And this is why I kept the past tense on the last sentence in this translation, to preserve some of the feeling that this whole meeting-your-boyfriend’s-parents-thing might not happen after all. Unfortunately, this makes it stick out more to the English reader, than to the Norwegian listener, but I think it’s the better choice.
