I completely agree with the notion that films can be art and that they don't have to entertain you in a conventional way. Modern audiences are conditioned to need films to fulfil their expectations. It's important for anyone who wants to be a filmmaker that they develop their palate by watching a broad range of films from art house to mass market, from silent movies to 3D IMAX, from Tarkovsky to Tarantino.
