Heartbreak High Reaction - Episode 4

Comments

I've never had my heart be so happy and so broken in one episode of a show before. The writing is just phenomenal.

I was going to make an observation about how this reminds me why I’m glad I’m no longer in high school, but this episode went well beyond that with all the things that other people have already mentioned in these comments. Probably because the problems with racist police brutality in the US gets such a strong focus, as well it should, this kind of problem in places like Australia was not familiar to me. Having a character who we have come to like so much openly brutalized by the police makes a strong statement, and it was shown in an uncompromising way. Not an easy episode to watch, especially with that scene followed by the three-way. Very uncomfortable, but of course I’m sure that’s the intention.

Because the rest of the episode goes to shit so quick people don't really comment on the school session. It is fucked that they split the groups and then only did the actual talk with the girls/non binary group. But the education that the police was providing was so shit not least of which it was not trauma informed. Harper should never have been in a position to be triggered and her reaction was a massive red flag that no one in authority followed up on. This is what I do and the whole SLT programme but especially this session is just so bad and not out of the ordinary.

Fellow Aussie and law student here who has studied this issue - our First Nations people are the most incarcerated people on the planet proportionately. The ratio of population to incarcerated people is bigger than even in the US with any other racial group given as you said they only make up about 3% of our total population and yet are the most incarcerated people per capita in the world. It's a no brainer unfortunately that that is largely due to over-policing, & an unfair criminal justice system that leads to police brutality etc.

I find it VERY interesting that you are so drawn to c$sh. I think it will make more sense to you in later episodes why you are so invested in him.

really excited to see you react to this episode! "wagging" = skipping school. regarding the police brutality scene - it has always been an issue in australia. there's always been that racist element in the policing of first nations people. first nations people make up only 3% of the population, but about 30% of the prison population is made up of first nations people. this often leads to racism and over-policing of first nation people. i wouldnt say it's on the same scale as the US but it is definitely prevalent. it's absolutely amazing that this show is highlighting this important social justice issue and raising awareness to the behaviour of police towards first nations people. body-worn cameras by police are almost standard in australia now and that has led to more accountability. nevertheless, the scene with malakai in this episode isn't uncommon.. which definitely needs to change. i REALLY didn't like the threesome scene at the end of this episode. it seems like harper and dustin took advantage of malakai when he was at his lowest. it shouldn't have happened.

I agree, I feel like they took advantage, I felt like he was not in a place where he really was able to consent…

Erin

Also found that threesome extremely uncomfortable to watch, considering how vulnerable Malakai was in that moment… didn’t feel right!

Darren and Ca$h are absolutely adorable! I shipped them from the start.. and I’m pretty sure that your affection and connection about Ca$h will even intensify as the show goes on 😉 The scene with the police officer really triggers me. As a woman with a Nigerian father I always feel so sad and also extremely angry when racist shit like this happens…. I still remember the tragic incident with George Floyd in 2020 and even marched in one of the big protests dedicated to him…#blm ✊🏾
