Carmine had figured things could end up this way. The life of a detective was interesting, but it was risky. A chuckle rose in her throat as she recalled her graduation from the police academy. She used to tie her hair up in a ponytail. That was a look…Now, she let the wavy, crimson locks hang to her shoulders. She thought she would have tanned more from her time on the beat, but her skin was still a fair shade. Carmine had always dreamed of taking down crooks, criminals, and big mob bosses. Such dreams always came with a losing hand. That was the very hand she had been dealt today, and no amount of folding would get her out of it.

Carmine scooped up food with both hands and stuffed it into her mouth. The flavors were enhanced beyond her belief. Everything she had eaten before paled in comparison. One handful of cake seemed more moist and sweet than even the ones her mother baked from scratch. Savory meats were utterly drenched in pink sauce, adding a sweet flavor that melded with the savory. It was all so good that Carmine didn’t mind how vastly different the assortment of foods was. She hardly felt any revulsion when her cheeks were stuffed with pasta and muffins. Textures that should never meld were overridden by her compulsion to consume.
