Sneak Peek - New Tasker with game changing new feature

Today's the end of the week for me (I won't be able to work tomorrow) so it's time for a special treat.

This could potentially open up so many new situations that I feel giddy thinking about it 😁

Tasker now has a Logcat Entry event! If you're not familiar with it, Logcat is a place where Android and all its apps put logs of stuff that's happening in the apps and now Tasker can react to it!

Just to give you a few examples of stuff that was done with it in the short time I tried it:

And I'm sure a lot more is possible! :D The Logcat is a gold mine for events!

For now you have to look at your logcat on your PC or an external app to figure out what logs to look for but I plan on making log discovery a bit easier in the future.

A typical log looks something like this:

2019-10-31 15:53:49.296 4896-5300/? I/GnssLocationProvider: Removing location updates from fused provider.

In the new Tasker event the Component corresponds to the bolded part and the Filter corresponds to the italic part so use that to react to logs. :)

There are also a few other goodies hidden in this beta, let me know if you find them ;)

Get this version here and let me know what you think!

Sneak Peek - New Tasker with game changing new feature

Comments

Things seem much better with this version. I have not seen the slow downs in my device, I have not had to reboot today and my battery was in much better condition this evening with about 45% battery remaining compared to the 10% that I had the last few days. Usage was not much different on any of the days so this is a much better result! Thanks!

Giving it a try now... Thanks! I haven't been able to track down what is going on as of yet so will see if this helps. Logs don't really show an issue. Thanks for all you do, I appreciate it!

Robert Burton

Hi Robert. I actually found an issue that could potentially be what you're seeing. Can you please try this version? https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UfMEt1H6wjlMDdsqByn-flCRqE45PdJ1/view?usp=sharing

João Dias

Good to know, thank you!

João Dias

No issues on my Samsung S10 so far

petrus munteanu

Maybe check the Tasker run log and see if something crazy's showing up there like a task running over and over...

João Dias

Yes.. I actually have to reboot a couple of times a day because my phone just almost comes to a crawl. Not sure what exactly is going on with it but thanks for confirming.

Robert Burton

Hhmm, I haven't noticed anything like that on my device. Have you tried rebooting by any chance?

João Dias

Hey João.. just wondering if you have noticed any performance issues with this version of Tasker? Some of my profiles are really lagging before being fired such as one that uses %WIN. I have a profile that fires when I open my app drawer but with this version, sometimes it didn't fire for several seconds. Something seems to be really killing my Note 9 and I don't know what it is right now. Several things have updated but the device slows to a crawl and I have to reboot a couple of times a day. Just curious if you have noticed anything?

Robert Burton

oh, yeah, that's nice. Ty

petrus munteanu

When you're in the variable select list.

João Dias

Hey, I don't see it. Where do you long click exactly?

petrus munteanu

Nice. :) Glad you like it!

João Dias

Yep! And I'll try to add a helper similar to the one in the Custom Setting action to make it easier to find the logs you need!

João Dias

Nope, should work on more! Not sure down to which version though...

João Dias

This looks like it could item a lot of possibilities.! I like the new long click to see variable value.. that could come in very handy!

Robert Burton

I think I can see the implications, that is instead of grasping for events that have to be hardcoded into Tasker, you can catch any android event and react to it, anything that android writes in a log. That can be huge if we learn to master it, infinite context possibilities :)

petrus munteanu

Does this only work on Android 10?
