No, I think it entirely makes sense! I can kind of see what you mean already. It's very much a "villain of the week used to reflect and highlight the internal struggles of the central characters" type formula, which I enjoy nonetheless. Thank you for this analysis, though! I'm finding it so interesting to see everyone's perspectives and interpretations of this show. It makes me love it even more!

A quick spotlight on the concepts and ideas behind the show to better understand the structure of the writing and thus enjoy the journey more … maybe. The idea of the show is built on three pillars: 1- The coming of age/teen drama, along the lines of shows like “Beverly Hills 90210” that was a big hit in the early 90's, here brought to the extremes of course. 2- Martial arts action, inspired by movies starring actors from Jean-Claude Van Damme to Jackie Chan, which also had their heyday in the late 80's and 90's. 3- The supernatural story to tie all three together. That said, it becomes pretty easy to understand how BTVS is a heavily character-driven show. The focus of the writers it's never on the villain of the moment, or some impending threat, these are just elements that they use to tell the real main story which is Buffy's personal growth, and of the other characters of course, as well as entertain the audience. Because of this there are basically no filler episodes, or “monster of the week” episodes, these are just as important to explore the characters, push them in their growth, and evolve the different dynamics and relationships, as much as those connected to the big bad of the season, if not more. The big bad storyline is actually secondary in the show, it's usually used to set the tone of the season, and to put Buffy in situations where she has to take decisions, make choices, and deal with the consequences, pushing her ahead in her journey toward maturity and growth as a person. Each season's main story arc is basically a phase in Buffy's life, and when she finally reach the end of such phase managing to tame or slay her personal demons the actual main villain/demon become barely an inconvenience, after all this is not the story of some big bad or apocalyptic threat, it's HER story … however dramatic, painful, violent, and brief it may be. Since season two, identifying the phase of her life explored in the season is quite simple, in the first one it can be a bit tricky for first time viewers because it's about her becoming the slayer. I know, it doesn't seem to make sense, but it will ... eventually … maybe.

Next time you are scared in the dark you can always remember Sid is probably in the shadows ready to protect you.

Your reaction to Syd was priceless 🤣🤣. You had me laughing the whole episode. Should I feel guilty getting so much enjoyment from your pain? 😂😂 Keep up the good work you are so much fun to watch.
