We've always been more interested in celebrating everything that happened at WKCR on Thursday nights, but despite us feeling generally ambivalent about our time at Hot 97, there were some really great moments for us at the station. In going through unlabeled/undated tapes last night, I came across this conversation that we had with Company Flow in 1997. The sometimes surreal humor that we relished during the wee hours of Thursday nights sometimes bled into Sundays, and I know we earned many smiles knowing that a lot of listeners who may have been tuned into Hot by default were confused by what they heard. I mean, who was expecting to hear G.G. Allin on Hot 97? Google him if you need help.
On this episode, our boys Company Flow, whom we had a friendship with going back to before Rawkus, when El-P was producing demos and getting told to give up music by a Tommy Boy executive whose identity will remain anonymous. By 1997, they were the leaders of the indie rap scene, but as soon as we started talking, the convo went in a very familiar direction. Still, I'm not sure where I got the idea to ponder the possibility of vegetables that are made from meat. The idea got everyone in the room excited. Enjoy the convo and a few songs of merit.
