Ep. 772 - The 2024 Summer Movie Wager

It's the annual Summer Movie Wager! Our friends BJ Colangelo, Germain Lussier, and Peter Sciretta return to make their wagers along with the Filmcast crew, on this summer's box office. Come back in the fall to see who will reign supreme as the winner of 2024’s wager.

We're making video versions of our reviews! Be sure to follow us on the following platforms:

The Summer Movie Wager is a game which we play during the summer of each year. You can find the history of the game and play along at thesummermoviewager.com (thanks to Dennis for putting the site together!). The general goal of this game is to predict the highest grossing films of the summer in terms of domestic box office, in the correct order. The closer you get to the final ranked order, the more points you get. This year, the summer movie wager will begin on May 2, 2024 (with the release of The Fall Guy) and last through September 2, 2023, Labor Day, as usual.

Each of your 13 picks (10 movies and 3 dark horses) gets a single score assigned to it by using the following rules:

-If your picked movie for #1 OR #10 is correct, you score 13 points for it.
-If your picked movie for 2-9  is correct, you score 10 points for it.
-If your picked movie is only 1 spot away from its actual placement, you score 7 points for it.
-If your picked movie is only 2 spots away from its actual placement, you score 5 points for it.
-If your picked movie is placed inside the Top 10, you score 3 points for it.
-If your picked movie is not placed inside the Top 10, you score 0 points for it.
-For each of your picked dark horses placed inside the Top 10, you score 1 point. If two or more rules apply to a single pick, only that single rule will be applied which assigns the highest point value to that pick. For example: If your pick for #1 is correct, you don't get 16 points for it because it is #1 and because it placed inside the Top 10; instead you only get 13 points for it.

Fall guy at 4 was crazy.

Oops!

I absolutely love anytime BJ Colangelo is on the podcast, and really hope they have her on a lot more often. However, I did want to point out that Maika Monroe is not in The Watchers, as BJ said, that is Dakota Fanning. Maika Monroe is in Longlegs though.

Stranger2Reality

I have serious doubts that Horizon is going to be some kind of conservative screed. Costner has been fairly quiet on his politics, though he recently supported Liz Cheney in her fight against Trump, and also supports Pete Buttigieg. These are going to be the 4th and 5th movies he's ever directed, and they've all been Westerns so far (Dances With Wolves, The Postman, and the under appreciated Open Range). I think he's just looking to tell a story, rather than make some kind political point (or if he is, I doubt it'll be right wing). Also, for anyone worrying that Sound of Freedom was a bad omen of things to come, with us being inundated with right wing movies, I wouldn't be quite so worried. The director of that movie released another film already this year, Cabrini, which was apparently also right wing and religious, but went largely unnoticed by audiences, making less than $20 million at the box office. Right wing audiences are probably too busy spending their money on Trump bibles and his legal fees to be able to support a string of absurd movies as well.

Stranger2Reality

Since when does this podcast condone attacking others? Very close to canceling my patreon support.

Tom Jensen

Great to hear the Summer Movie Wager getting a call out on this weeks Empire Podcast.

Duncan

I get the cynicism, but I refuse to believe Despicable Me 4 will win the summer.

Mountain of Conflict

I think Jeff is really handicapping himself by not watching trailers.. I know it's the cost of the unsullied lifestyle but I feel like it keeps impacting his results in the Summer Movie Wager (e.g. not realizing Christopher Robin was a depressing adult drama or that Chris Hemsworth is in Furiosa).

Michael Hein

Yes, this is totally a Midwest thing. I was just telling my girlfriend that the 19 tornadoes we had in the area last Friday are probably the best marketing they could hope for

Michael Hein

Enjoyed it, BJ Colangelo is a great addition

DarmineDoggyDoor

Guys….Twister$

Mountain of Conflict

I would love to see Jeff's list of what he thinks will be his favorite movies of the summer and compare them against his picks. See if cynical Jeff is right or not.

Douggie Sharpe

Stop saying stuff like that, I can't change my list anymore 😂

Mountain of Conflict

Also, Davindra! Garfield is not a Sony Animation film! It's released by Sony but the talented folks at Sony Animation had nothing to do with that movie.

John Terranova

Don't think so! https://discord.io/5by5DLC

Zomino

As someone who knows all the secret goodies in Deadpool, it's hard for me to imagine that it won't beat out the competition significantly for the number one spot. I also wouldn't be surprised if they release a "Disney" alt cut the same way there was a PG-13 alt of Deadpool 2.

John Terranova

is that only for patreon DLC subscribers?

John Terranova

By the way, the DLC podcast Discord group is competing for our second annual Summer Wager!

Zomino

AMC is all over the world, regardless, it's the biggest theater chain in the world, including Europe. I'm VERY surprised that an actor as big as Chris doesn't know where his fame and money come from.

Nicholas Schultz

Finally! Dave offhandedly mentions Late Night with the Devil!

Asher Maitin

He’s Australian and once he got involved with Hollywood probably never had a movie experience in the US outside of Hollywood. so not too surprising to me.

Olivia Oliver

Longlegs also might be your horror hit of the Summer. People are freaking out about the marketing over on Instagram.

Nicholas Ewers

This is the first summer box office wager listen where I was like, ‘wow, a lot of these don’t excite me’- not saying I won’t be surprised, but never thought I would feel this. Very hopeful for some though, and keen to look back at this comment and think how little I knew then

Jay Wood

Twisters is going to do so much better than everyone but Germain is assuming it’s going to do. Twister has been in the conversation a lot lately among us normies. Plus that trailer always gets a great reaction from the audiences I’ve been around. It’s going to be a threat, for sure.

Nicholas Ewers

What's wild (when looking at Top 10's only, not dark horses) is that there is not a single movie that is 100% unique to any single person's list. The ordering is all mixed up, but y'all all picked roughly from the same 15 movies. Is this common across past years? Edit: I take it back. Peter is the only person to put Garfield in his Top 10. I will be rooting for Peter accordingly.

Luke Johnson

I think real life tornados will actually get more people to watch Twister.🌪️

David Esposito

Jeff said a Despicable Me franchise film has always beaten a Pixar film in the box office that same summer. Not true! Toy Story 3 murdered Despicable Me in 2010. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/year/2010/

Papool Chaudhari

Jeff. I too loved the Fall Guy tv show

Jaxon Hampton

Horizon is likely to do very well

Wil Johnson

Seeing these lists makes me depressed over how few big movies coming out this summer look interesting at all. Hopefully there will be some good smaller movies coming out alongside all of these.

Stranger2Reality

Germain may only be on two episodes a year but man, he consistently kills it with the one liners 😂

Gareth

I think this is the best list Jeff has made in a long time. Dave putting Bad Boys at 3 is easily the most baffling choice of the episode.

PoorFrisco

The Bad Boys Trailer looks not good

Tyler Sexton

You've got to talk about this line from Chris... https://youtu.be/nB-5SEW3iC4?t=518 He doesn't know what AMC is!?!?!? This is hilarious and depressing.
