Oh there’s 10 minutes left of the podcast! Oh… oh.

Yeah, watch the old pentalogy! Dave is gonna have so much fun. The end of the first sequel alone is insane. 1. You guys are reaaaaally hung up on the title of a movie. Who thinks about that as soon as the movie starts 2. ALL of the Apes movies are downers. Dawn ends without the hope for peace for example. Jason Clarke just leaves. 3. The problem with awarding Serkis for his performance is that it's tweaked by animators. Who knows what his actual performance was even if Serkis always maintains it's all his. 4. No, it's not about nature winning as Devindra correctly says. It's just that humans will in the end always choose to kill apes and killers are defeated in this franchise. Preacher, the guy with the crossbow, is like that German soldier in Saving Private Ryan. He begs for his life and yet would turn around and shoot you

Kingdom was a bit of a bore. I did enjoy the use of birds in this movie but I’m bored of the franchise in general

Yeah, it’s definitely intentional on Gunn’s part. He has posted dozens of images for inspiration he’s taking and all images have shown Superman in classic beloved storylines. None involved this very specific one of a kind New 52 version. This is absolutely without a doubt a deliberate choice meant to evoke more dark gritty cool Superman feelings, which will be met with a 180 shift in tone.

I did not care for this film when it came out in 2017. I absolutely adored Dawn, the 2014 second film of the series. Coming back to War, I ended up appreciating the quieter moments a lot more. I actually watched Kingdom before rewatching War. War is a superior film in my opinion.

Oooh, calling out the gang! Yet #respectful…🙂

Hi guys. Hoping y’all will talk about EXHUMA when it releases to VOD in early June. It was out in theaters for only a couple weeks, with very little promotion, but I thought that at least one of you would see it, given your massive respect for OLDBOY. (Choi Min-sik is still a fantastic actor, and I’m willing to bet you’ve seen Jang Jae-hyun’s first feature THE PRIESTS.) That said: there’s only so many “watches” y’all can fit into your schedules. But I tell you: EXHUMA is pretty terrific, and I hope you’ll discuss…thanks as always!

Whew! As someone who just doesn’t closely follow superhero genres (neither in movies nor comics), I’m astonished and impressed (and I’m not joking here at all!) at this level of knowledge and attention to historical detail. Thank you for this post, fellow Filmcast enthusiast!

I have some theories about the Superman first look, because I trust James Gunn. I think firstly - this is intended to be "Superman can relax and be vulnerable" in the style of an iconic Alex Ross painting where Superman is slumped over in a chair. But it's not great execution of that. Based on small bits of info, it feels like this movie will be somewhat meta, commenting on Superman's depictions in recent years - so the use of the New 52 style suit (which was a comic book reboot meant to show realistic/movie-like versions of characters) is a big signal that this movie will be meta. The Kingdom Come logo even hints at a classic Superman, who fully embraces the purity of his character. I wouldn't be surprised if the suit gets switched out for an alternate version in the movie itself (clearly it's already battered and can become more messed up). In the comics, the Rebirth era (meta subtext being the Gunn era) corrects the New 52 era (meta subtext being the Snyder era) and gives Superman a classic suit again. In fact, the first Superman picture posted before this one, with the chest logo shows a slightly different version of the chest logo- which shows the yellow shield behind it being much brighter. I bet that's the new suit for the second half of the film.

I must admit, I'm a bit confused by the reactions over the Superman picture. It....looks like Superman? What should it have been? It's weird that he's putting on his boot?

I think the intent of the Superman image is to evoke (without recreating) the cover of All-Star Superman #1, with Superman sitting on a cloud. Instead of a dramatic action shot or an epic heroic pose, something quieter, calmer, expressing Morrison’s idea that Superman would be extremely relaxed and not feel stress or fear. I’m not sure that it works here though - it kind of gives off the impression that he’s kind of blasé about the attack (?) happening in the background. I really don’t like the high collar, in my opinion Superman should always have his neck/clavicle bared (that also underlines the idea that he is invulnerable). The high collar and the angular stylized S comes across as militaristic, which I don’t think Superman should ever be. Also weird to see the loose material with thick folds. I very much trust Gunn to make a good movie but this is a decidedly poor first image.

I'm glad you guys revisited this one because you completely slept on it when it came out

James Gunn commented on his post and said it was “entirely in-camera”. Though, I agree. It doesn’t look in-camera

Justina

My issue with the Superman image is that it's not a photo, it's art. Doesn't look like a real photo at all. Terrible looking AI art.

Papool Chaudhari

Regarding the Superman picture released, I was struck by how much the actor resembled Henry Cavill. At least in that pose/picture. Weird choice in my opinion!
