The Simon Baker stuff is hilarious! Reading the Daily Mail headline now.

Chris Ssentongo

This podcast episode is wild , crazy how this whole daily mail fiasco happened.

On behalf of sensible Australians everywhere (& though not all sensible, we ARE everywhere - I don't know if you've noticed, but the world is infested with Australians), I wish to apologise to Jeff about the whole Simon Baker storm in a teacup. It seems he unwittingly ran head-on into the phenomenon known down here as The Cultural Cringe. While Australians like to think we should be OK to eat at the grown-up's table, we secretly think maybe we're really only good enough for the kiddie's table. This plays out in discourse with observations such as "...XYZ is a good movie, for an Australian one..." or "...I don't want an Australian for this job, I want the best!" The obverse of this is that if one of us does manage to rise to international prominence, & any whiff of criticism appears, some Aussies feel obliged to rabidly defend them, unto death. So, sorry about that. BTW, for a little more context, SkyNews is a Murdoch TV outlet here in Oz, with similar profile/politics/attitudes as FoxNews over there. Sadly (IMHO), Murdoch owns pretty much all the mainstream media down here. No doubt he owns The Daily Mail too. Keep up the good work. Andy (Melbourne - not the one in Florida)

Had he thought the person was adorable, the answer would have been: "Yes, he was adorable". When you say it like this it's implied that his opinion of the person was not positive. He did say nice was not the right word = not nice.

I had to go to the comments for this discussion of the movie, because as soon as Dave mentioned his thoughts on inside out, I really felt they were just off. Jeff, however, really gets the meaning and feeling of inside out. That memories really are multi emotional, and that’s what the movie was trying to express.

PocketCasts has an awesome „skip silence“ feature - worth trying out (my statistics tell me that I saved 3 days listening time in the last few years just by using that feature)

Roman Schweikert

I had to click into this story to make sure Jeff didn’t do this again to Gwyneth Paltrow. https://www.thedailybeast.com/gwyneth-paltrow-gets-called-out-for-dismissive-attitude-toward-co-star

Rylie Knox

I worked with Simon Baker and Robin Tunney (on different movies they individually co-starred in). They were both fine, especially Robin.

J Hay

You’re not thinking of Mark Thompson, are you guys? Don’t know if he does sports; I don’t follow sports at all anymore.

J Hay

Dave, pretty sure the Sports center host you were thinking of is Craig Kilborn. He hosted from 93-96 and was known for his catchphrases.

Papool Chaudhari

Seriously can't believe he got away with that

Russell Hull

This episode claims the new record for silent pauses so long I thought my player stopped working

Russell Hull

its episodes like these why im a patron LOL but in all seriousness sry you guys had to go through this

Benjamin Corpuz

You really should email this episode to the Daily Mail’s writer

AF

when I google Simon Baker, this story is the first story to pop up lol.

Michael Zhang

Most of the time it is self-deprecating jokes. In general, though, it is rare to see stuff written up in news stories that is sourced from a comment someone makes like 30-60 minutes into a podcast (exceptions: massive podcasts like Joe Rogan or anything involving celebrities) -DChen

Slashfilmcast

I’m so interested in how you guys think we listen to podcasts. You always joke about how no one is listening to the After Darks but in this episode you appear to genuinely suggest that not many people are listening as far as an hour into the podcast. Sometimes the review has barely started after an hour. If I listen to a podcast that is one hour and 37 minutes long then I am listening to it for one hour and 37 minutes.

Bram Welch

Extremely kind to refer to the daily mail as 'news'. They are cancer and every one who works for them are scum.

Liam Marcon

SkyNews: Filmcast host slams Dave Chen as “Out of his gourd”

Cliff Williams

By the way, these people are probably not listening to the podcasts, they’re more likely using search tools to find keywords in the transcripts. https://searchengineland.com/google-brings-search-to-podcasts-through-automatic-transcription-314798

Peter Tribe

Dave: Is the Daily Mail “journalism”? Me: I wouldn’t use that word.

Peter Tribe

Also he pronounces“Aussie” wrong, it should be “Ozzy”. But no biggy most yanks say it wrong.😆

Peter Tribe

Incredible podcasting.

Mac

Daily mail, "scientists find new ocean under the surface of the earth's crust twice the size of the pacific. " *click on the article, and two paragraphs in* "Technically it's not an ocean because the water molecules are bound to mineral deposits." It's all about the clicks baby.

Cardassian Vexillology

Today I learned Dave also listens to Accidental Tech Podcast

Midnight Satire

I agree. It did sound like he was implying he isn’t nice. Those news sites did exaggerate it though.

David Esposito

I mean, that probably is exactly what Jeff meant. I assume Simon Baker was not nice. But it is still absurd that his one off vague comment turned into multiple articles. That’s what the discussion is more about.

Grant McConnaughey

So… next week is “Inside Out 2 review with special guest Simon Baker? I assume?

Ryan

I really don't know why Jeff couldn't even communicate that very easy point succinctly in this episode.

Mountain of Conflict

To be fair, I read Jeff’s “I wouldn’t use that word” comment as the guy was not nice. If I didn’t know whether a guy was nice or not I would say “I don’t know the person” rather than saying “nice” is not the word I would use. It sort of implies that you would use another word to describe them, but you’d rather not say what that word is out loud.

Tyler Sexton

Agreed. Good on Jeff for beautifully articulating the meaning of the ending.

Ryan Crisp

The Daily Mail headline: Chen says Inside Out is a horrible movie that encourages depression in children.

Eric Webster

Oh also Marv Albert is the announcer in question (I’m pretty sure) and the boom! Jokes never get old for me!

Reynaldo K. Cruz

Sounds like Riley — if a listener — has never heard about snitches getting stitches

Lino Rodriguez Jr.

Dave’s cynical take on inside out has made me sad. Jeff’s rebuttal has made me happy! I now have a two colored memory sphere!

Reynaldo K. Cruz

Was rooting for Jeff to correct him, dave style.

Reynaldo K. Cruz

Daily Mail: I never met Jeff Cannata or had any contact with him, but... I'm sorry, I can't go on.

Abe Foster

The Daily Mail is a xenophobic, racist newspaper and their online site is no better, misogynist in the extreme.

Garry L

Had to do a double take with the way Dave pronounced “banal”
